FUN FACTS

(Courtesy of babycenter.com)

Amazing you

  • In your whole life, your mouth will make about 10,000 gallons of spit. That's enough to fill a giant swimming pool.
  • Babies have more bones than grown-ups. You're born with about 300 bones, but when you're grown up you end up with around 260. What happens? As you get older some of your small bones grow together into big ones.
  • Every person on earth has a different fingerprint. We all have different tongue prints, too.

Big and Small

  • The smallest insects of the world are called fairyflies, a kind of wasp. Fairyflies are as thin as a thread. They aren't strong enough to fly well, so mostly let wind carry them from place to place.
  • The biggest insect on earth is the giant walking stick, which can grow to about 13 inches long. That's about as long as a chopstick.
  • Termites make the biggest insect nests of the world. A termite nest found in Australia was as large as a house. Another nest found in Africa was a tall as a building.

Animal body facts

  • Hippos don't have to worry about packing sunscreen. Their skin makes a pink slime that blocks the sun.
  • Crocodile mommies never have to teach their babies not to stick their tongue out at other crocodiles. This is because crocodiles can't stick their tongue out - their tongue is attached to the top of their mouth.
  • Honeybees have hair on their eyes to help keep their eyeballs clean. The hair catches dirt and pollen.
  • Honeybees have hair all over their bodies, like dogs and cats. Do you think it tickles?
  • Butterflies have about 1,200 eyes. But they're clustered together, so they kind of look like one big eye.
  • Starfish don't have brains. They feel their way through life just using the senses of touch and taste and smell.

Eating

  • Cows have four stomachs.
  • Pretty much the only thing moles eat is worms, and they eat tons of them.
  • The front teeth of rodents like rats and mice never, ever stop growing. The only reason they don't get huge is because they get worn down by hard food, like seeds and grains.
  • If you're skiing in Sweden and get hungry for a Happy Meal, no worries. Sweden has a ski-through McDonald's.
  • A cow needs to drink four gallons of water to make one gallon of milk.
  • A python snake can eat a whole pig in one big gulp.

Getting around

  • Walking catfish can live on land or in water. And they really do walk, but it looks more like wiggling on their tummy.
  • Giraffes probably can't swim, since no one has ever seen one doing this.
  • Porcupines float in water.
  • Elephants walk on tiptoe.

Hear this

  • If you want to hear the thumpa-thumpa of a shrimp's heart, put your ear against his head. That's where his heart is.
  • Most lizards don't talk at all. Except geckos, who chirp and growl. And iguanas, who make a low hiss.
  • Chameleons make a soft hoot. But this doesn't come from their mouth. It's the sound of their body vibrating.

I didn't know that!

  • Take a close look at this sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy yellow dog." It uses every letter in the alphabet.
  • Zebras are actually white, with black stripes.
  • Cats sleep about 16 hours a day.
  • Every zebra on earth has a unique pattern of stripes that no other zebra has.
  • What do a little barnyard chicken and a mighty T-Rex have in common? Scientists studying their bones have discovered they're related, sort of like cousins.
  • Two earthquakes happen every minute somewhere in the world.

Space

  • Comets are space rocks made mostly from ice and dust, just like giant dirty snowballs.
  • Meteorites are rocks from outer space.
  • The sun is a giant ball of exploding fire. It's so far away it won't hurt you unless you stay outside too long and get a sunburn, but it makes you warm. People on earth need the sun's warmth to live comfortably.
  • A galaxy is a huge bunch of stars that hang out near each other.
  • Asteroids are small planets that are very hard to see, even with a giant telescope.

What's that called?

  • We usually call those cute little white cat paws "boots." But they're really called gloves.
  • A group of cats is called a clutter or a chowder.
  • A group of wolves is called a pack.
  • Baby eels are called elvers.
  • A group of monkeys is called a band or a troop.
  • A group of lions is called a pride.
  • Baby koalas are called joeys.
  • A group of dogs is called a pack.
  • A group of whales is called a gam or a pod.
  • Baby turtles are called hatchlings.
  • A group of chickens is called a clutch or a brood.
  • Baby seahorses are called colts, just like baby horses that live on land.

New Year

February 10, 2013
Year of the Snake

Dear Women of St. Luke Parish,

Like every month there is much to celebrate and think about.  The famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did not see his shadow, so we are expecting an early Spring.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday which is Wednesday, February 13th followed by Valentine's Day to honor our sweethearts.   The St. Luke Dinner Dance Auction is February 23rd.  We also celebrate and recognize Black History and American Heart Disease month and our Founding Father's birthday, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Among much more, have a good February!

Stepping way back to December, the combined Men's and Women's Club Christmas Party event at Kevil's was terrific. We had an excellent turnout and it really was a great way to wish many friends of our St. Luke community a joyous holiday season.  There was much celebrating and a fabulous festive holiday vibe to the night.

Also, in December we went through the survey results thoroughly.  We were hoping to get a better feel for what the group likes/wants more of, etc. We had several comments and wanted to respond to them. Please see below for more information on this. Again we really appreciate all the feedback, it helps a ton!

And more recently, last Thursday we had a great turn out on a very chilly evening at the SLWC event, "Cooking For Your Sweetie".  Over 50 women braved the cold and learned a lot from chef/baker SLWC member Angie Montroy. The group had a lot of fun seeing old friends and meeting new ones.  The menu selections were perfect and just in time for Valentine's Day.  Recipes and more about the event below.  Thank you to Angie for sharing her time, talent and energy.  It was a ball.

If you have a talent that you'd like to share with the SLWC, please let us know and we can see what we can do about creating an event out of it!!

And lastly, to warm up for St. Patrick's Day we have secured Wednesday, March 13th at Molly Malone's for a private Irish Dancing class - women AND men welcome!  See more details below.

Have a warm February and a LOVE-ly Valentine's Day:)

Thank you for your continued support.

Cooking For Your Sweetie

Once again, we'd like to thank Angie Montroy for her time and efforts last Thursday night.  The food was delicious and her knowledge of food was vast.  If you weren't able to join us, here are some notes and recipes from the evening from Angie.  Enjoy!

"Hello Ladies!

It was so great to cook and eat with you all last Thursday evening!  Thank you for asking questions, love that!  Please, if you have questions regarding cooking or my recipes, feel free to email me!

Here is the bolognese sauce recipe.  If you feel squeamish about cutting up chicken livers, you can put them into the food processor and pulverise them.  Pour them right into the sauce.  Easy peasy.   http://www.angiespantry.com/slow-cooked-bolognese-sauce/

The chocolate pudding recipe is on my blog.  I actually made a parfait with some buttery graham cracker crumbs.  I did not use real whipped cream there but I've included a link for whipped cream with the stabilizer below.  You do not need to stabilize the whipped cream if you just want to fold it into the pudding.  Use the "trick" if you want to make the whipped cream a day or hours ahead.  For two cups of prepared whipped cream you use one cup of heavy whipping cream. By all means, if time doesn't allow, simply use thawed Cool Whip in the pudding!  Or- you could buy the real stuff in the can and squirt it into the bowl and fold it into the pudding!  Do what's easiest for you!

http://www.angiespantry.com/french-silk-parfaits/ Homemade chocolate pudding.  Simply add cubed chocolate cake and fresh whipped cream, Cool Whip or Redi-Whip to the individual glasses.  To rim the glasses with colored sugar, just lightly wet the rims with your finger dipped in a little water.  Dip the top of the glass into a bowl of sugar.

Here's the Hershey's Cocoa Cake recipe.  http://www.angiespantry.com/graduation-cupcakes-3/

How to dress your salad.  Lightly coat the greens with olive oil, salt & pepper.  Toss gently.  Add the vinaigrette a tablespoon or so at a time and gently toss.  Give it a taste, add more if you need to.  http://www.angiespantry.com/red-leaf-lettuce-salad-with-raspberry-vinaigrette/ Raspberry Vinaigrette

http://angiemontroyangiespantry.blogspot.com/2010/05/crispy-oven-fried-chicken.html Excellent oven fried chicken.

Parmesan encrusted chicken breasts, YUMMY!  http://www.angiespantry.com/chicken-parmesan/

Homemade stock.  The recipe is for turkey stock but you can easily make it with chicken bones.  http://www.angiespantry.com/turkey-stock-soup/

Attached you will find the recipe for the French Bread.  I've included where to use the dough for pizza or cinnamon rolls!

Click Here for French Bread Recipe

Lastly, here is an amazing cream cheese frosting recipe.  It happens to be with a most excellent cake recipe!  Again, one bowl!"

Thank you again!

Survey Results

In December of last year we went through the survey results.  It was nice because we received some great feedback.  Most of the comments were positive and many of them had ideas.  So we'd like to throw them out there and our response to them, in hopes to generate some interest.

One of our biggest struggles when looking at hosting any type of event, is 'the calendar'.  The school, the parish, the religious ed, the men's club, etc. have many events planned throughout the year, too.  So we try to sneak an event in when other things are not planned.  We felt we hit a good rhythm last year and plan to stick to it this year.  However looking forward, if someone or a group wants to pick up one of the following ideas and run with it we would be pleased.  The first step would be finding a good
fit in the calendar for it.

HERE WERE SOME OF THE IDEAS:
  1. Some type of  SLWC fitness club
  2. Some type of elderly reach out program
  3. Indoor garage sale
  4. Bowling at Circle Lanes
  5. Something organized after Sunday mass for families
  6. Support fundraisers of the St Luke ministries, namely the Learning Center fundraiser
  7. Cookie walk/$1 toy boutique for kids for presents
  8. Prayer groups during Lent/more service related projects
  9. Day of retreat at The Well
  10. Book Club
  11. Host inspiring women to speak at SLWC
OUR RESPONSES:
  1. If you are interested in coming together to figure out some type of fitness club - get in touch with Noreen Leavy - [email protected] or 708 404 0556.
  2. We love idea of elderly reachout program, if anyone is interested in pursuing this further please contact Molly Hague - [email protected] or 708 366 6778.
  3. The garage sale is a tricky one, we just recently spoke to someone at another parish who helps with theirs, it's A LOT of work and not a lot of return.  However if there is an interested group out there.  Please get in touch with us.
  4. We have looked into the idea of starting a bowling league next year, possibly at Circle Lane.  We will keep you informed as this progresses.
  5. Last year we hosted - Pack the Pews - Honoring Our Blessed Mother Mary, during the month of May, which was an excellent get together for families.  We also host a Coffee on the Plaza which is a nice family event.  We'd like to get a service oriented family event on the books, if anyone has a specific idea.
  6. We open up the newsletter to all the ministry leaders. If they want to run someone in it, we are more than happy to do this.  When the Learning Center event comes up, please get in touch with us to put in the newsletter.
  7. The cookie walk/toy boutique may be a good fit for the craft fair that is held at St. Luke around Christmas time.  This is run by a school organization called the FSA, more information can be obtained by the school 366 8587 if anyone is interested in pursuing this more.
  8. We felt that St. Luke has a lot of offer during Lenten season and we don't want to compete with anything they have going on.  Please make sure to keep your eyes open for their prayer groups, mission speakers and especially all of the Easter Week masses.  They are truly beautiful.
  9. We liked the idea of having a retreat the The Well  - a ministry of the Congregation of St. Joseph in LaGrange.  This is close by so it's easy to access.  We looked into possibly doing something Advent 2013, around the first week of December for a 1/2 day retreat.  We will keep you updated.
  10. We liked the idea of a book club, if anyone wants to step up to run it, even it it meets 3 or 4 times a year. Please contact Noreen Leavy - [email protected] or 708 404 0556
  11. If anyone knows of a good speaker, please get in touch with one of us.  We are always open to checking into this possibility.
We also had a handful of women accept the offer to possibly become members of the board.  We plan to reach out and meet sometime soon to discuss this a bit more.  You can run, but you can not hide!!!  Thank you for your support and interest, we are truly grateful!

Kids Lenten Jelly Bean Project

Here is an activity for your children

that will help them to

appreciate the virtues of Lent.

On Ash Wednesday, set out a glass jar for each child with a small copy of the jellybean prayer taped to it. Determine a behavior to go with each jellybean color (corresponding with the prayer). Each day the kids could earn a jellybean of any color they followed through on. They can't eat the jellybeans until Easter. They cannot earn white jellybeans because these represent the Grace of Christ, which is a gift not earned ourselves. On Easter morning, the kids wake to find their jars filled up where they were still empty (lacking) with white jellybeans (Christ's grace).

Jelly Bean Prayer

Red is for the blood He gave
Green is for the grass He made
Yellow is for the sun so bright
Orange is for the edge of night
Black is for the sins we made
White is for the grace He gave
Purple is for the house of sorrow
Pink is for the new tomorrow

This is how you could interpret each color or make your own ideas based on ages and needs of your children:

  • Red is for the blood Christ gave (each morning choose something to sacrifice that day to earn the red jellybean, something they would have the opportunity to have or do on that day)
  • Green is for the palm's cool shade (earned for good deeds, as it was a good dead to provide shade for Jesus with the palm)
  • Yellow is for God's light so bright (earned for sharing God's light through kindness to others)
  • Orange is for prayers at twilight (earned for attentive behavior during bedtime prayer time or night time bible story, etc.)
  • Black is for sweet rest at night (earned for going to bed well, or you could use blue since some kids are not fans of black jellybeans)
  • White is for the Grace of Christ (these cannot be earned as mentioned above)
  • Purple is for His days of sorrow (earned these through apologizing to anyone you hurt with your words or deeds that day)
  • Pink is for each new tomorrow (earned when you forgave those who apologized to us for hurtful behavior)

In Our Prayers

Please keep the following special intentions in prayer:

  • For Mrs. Norris (St. Luke Pre K teacher) and all our family and friends that have surgery or been recently hospitalized or fighting illness.  We wish and pray for healthy and quick recoveries.
  • Father Charles Musula who lost his father, Elias Sanane,  this past month.  Our hearts and prayers go out to him and his family and friends. Memorial Service is this Sunday, February 10th beginning at 4:30.  Reception to follow.
  • For our Founding Father's, the men and women that paved the trail to our country's freedoms and democratic system.
  • For those who have been affected by heart disease. Continue to heal them and receive the treatments and education they need to lead long and healthy lives.
  • For the brave African American people of our country that created, educated, looked into the eyes of prejudice, persevered and helped make great contributions to our country throughout history, especially the idea that we are one and equal.
  • For the gift of LOVE and the boundless LOVE we receive from our Lord and our friends and family.
  • For our friend, Bob Lewis. Bob and his family will need our prayers and support for the next several months as he undergoes cancer treatments. Click here for more information.
  • For Kathleen O'Bryan Kurrle and family - May the grace, strength, hope, generosity, and love of God and our community be with them.
  •  For our dear family members and friends who are facing hardships.  Continue to bring them hope, comfort, strength and God's light every day.
  • May we ask and feel the power of God's loving mercy, especially during the Lenten season.

Our heartfelt condolences to all who have recently lost a beloved family member or friend of St. Luke Parish.

May the souls of

Elizabeth M. O'Riley, Alice L. Hobin,

Providence Kokocki and Jean LoGalbo

rest in peace.

"Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

Our Deepest Sympathies

Our deepest sympathies go out to our SLWC members who have recently lost a loved one.  Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
