Lessons From Lindgren: I've Got To Get My Cost
It's second nature to us to think in terms of the cost of doing the work. When we talk to a client we always talk "cost" because we want them to understand that we have all of that expensive machinery and software, the big building, etc. that are necessary to produce what they want.
We have estimating software packages that express this by using $500 per hour for the six color press with a two person crew earning $60 per hour between them. Talking "cost" to the client is a good strategy, but not necessarily a good one when talking to ourselves.
If we come to believe that the $500 per hour number is true, we can overlook the possibility that the value of the project to the client is such that $600 would be even truer. We can also be blinded to times when $400 was on the table and would fill up hours that the press would be idle.
Bob Lindgren is the President and CEO of Printing Industries Association of Southern California, the largest affiliate of PIA. Mr. Lindgren has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in the area of print finance.

Ask The Tech Experts
Ask The Tech Experts is a resource of PIA's Center for Technology and Research that features the responses to questions covering a wide gamut of topics. If you would like to ask a technical question, simply email Dillon Mooney at dmooney@printing.org or call PIA's toll-free hotline at 1-800-910-4283.In the paper manufacturing process, what is used to create paper brightness?
Fillers such as calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide are added to paper to increase brightness. Optical brighteners or fluorescent dyes increase brightness considerably because they emit blue-violet visible light when activated by invisible UV light. A customer is complaining that our litho printed sheets are emitting an odor when run through a toner digital press. What is causing this?
Odor issues are difficult to determine; however, residual solvents from ink could be flashed off with the high temperatures of fuser roller, or something in the paper/coating is reacting to the high heat. Run some unprinted paper through to determine if the odor is coming from the ink or paper. If it is coming from the ink, discuss this with your ink supplier. If it is coming from the paper, use a laser-compatible printer.

Colorado Repeals State Employment Verification Law
Colorado employers are now relieved of their obligation to complete and maintain the state employment verification affirmation form aimed at ensuring that new hires are legally eligible for employment in the United States.
Governor John Hickenlooper signed the measure into law on June 8, and it took effect last month. The law also removes employers' obligation to keep copies of documents provided by new hires to prove their identity and employment eligibility in support of the I-9 verification process.
In repealing most of Section 8-2-122 of the Colorado Revised Statutes, the Colorado Legislature acknowledged that the additional state employment verification affidavit and documentation requirements imposed an extra, redundant burden on employers while doing nothing to prevent unauthorized individuals from working in Colorado. The fines and penalties for failure to comply with the additional state verification requirements have been repealed as well.
The legislature kept the provision in Section 8-2-122 that permits the director of the Colorado Division of Labor to request documentation from employers to show they are in compliance with the federal government's I-9 employment verification requirements. The director or his or her designee still may conduct random audits of employers to ensure compliance with I-9 obligations.

The Arizona Department of Revenue has issued a ruling regarding the determination of income or withholding tax due dates, considering the effect of weekends and legal holidays. The income tax or withholding tax returns or related tax payments must be filed or made by prescribed due dates. However, if the due date falls on a weekend and/or a legal holiday, the due date is extended to the next business day. Thus, returns and payments made on the next business day are considered as timely. Source: General Tax Ruling GTR 16-2, Arizona Department of Revenue

Avoid These Mistakes To Shine As A Leader
Nobody is perfect, not even the great leaders. But most of them have been able to overcome the most common mistakes. Use this checklist as a guide to behaviors you want to avoid:
1. Vague, poorly defined goals. Do people know what you expect? When? Why?
2. Poor communication. Do your employees have trouble following your directions?
3. Poor alignment between short- and long-term. Do your day-to-day activities support your strategic goals?
4. Inflexibility. Do you take individual circumstances into account when you make decisions?
5. Little professional development. Do you constantly work on improving your skills? Do you help others do the same?
6. Trust and integrity problems. Do people trust you? Can you depend on them to be reliable?

Latest On Coffee
Is drinking coffee good for you? Some studies say yes, some say no. A recent article by The New York Times linked to a number of different studies touting the positive effects of caffeine on several different health problems. They include:
Liver damage. A review of data collected by studies of more than 430,000 people found that coffee may lower the risk of cirrhosis of the liver, a disease associated with over-indulgence in alcohol (among other causes). Tinnitus. Researchers kept track of more than 65,000 women and found that those who drank more than one 8-ounce cup of coffee a day were less likely to suffer from tinnitus, that persistent ringing or buzzing in your ears. Auto crashes. A study of truck drivers who routinely work on long hauls found that coffee drinkers (or consumers of other caffeinated drinks) seem 63 percent less likely to be involved in crashes while driving. Melanoma. An analysis of health and dietary data involving more than 400,000 people ages 50-71 found that those who drank four or more cups of coffee a day were 20 percent less likely to develop skin cancer. (The researchers cautioned that avoiding exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays is still the most important way to avoid melanoma.)

Quote For The Week
"Perfectionism is simply putting a limit on your future. When you have an idea of perfect in your mind, you open the door to constantly comparing what you have now with what you want. That type of self criticism is significantly deterring." John Eliot
