Two Thirds Of Americans Still Read Printed Magazines

The good news for print continues! According to a recent study most adults still prefer to consume content across both sides of the digital divide.

According to Mequoda, the "American Magazine Reader Study & Handbook," 70 percent of adults in the U.S. read a print magazine in the last 30 days, and 51 percent read at least two. In what may come as something of a surprise, those figures are almost completely flat compared to the same study last year, in which 70 percent of respondents also reported having read a print magazine in the past month.

The findings seem to indicate that digital magazines - in the study, defined as "magazine content distributed via electronic means" - still have work to do to catch up to their print counterparts.

While not explicitly addressed in the study, there is certainly significant overlap between magazine brands' print and digital audiences, and the findings lend credence to the common industry maxim that publishers should attempt to reach consumers across any medium available to them.

The multiplatform consumer is typically older and more affluent than the digital-only consumer, according to the study, and 1.67 times more likely to spend $100 or more per year on digital magazine content than the digital-only consumer, although only 1.8 percent of respondents reported spending that much on digital magazine content in the last year, and 76.1 percent said they spent nothing at all.

Multi-platform consumers are also growing in number, up 32 percent since last year, according to the study, although it's not clear how many of those consumers were previously print-only, as opposed to digital-only. In general, print-only consumers are 1.76 times more likely to be female.

New Pregnancy Law In Colorado

The Colorado Civil Rights Division has released a  suggested notice for employers to post related to the state's new pregnancy accommodation law.

Under the law, Colorado employers must post a notice of employee rights as well as provide written notice to new hires at the start of employment and existing employees no later than December 8, 2016.

The new law, which went into effect on August 10, requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees for health conditions related to pregnancy or physical recovery from childbirth unless doing so would impose an undue hardship on the employer. The  new law's requirements also include an obligation to engage in the interactive process to identify reasonable accommodations.

The state's suggested notice is available in both English and Spanish. Employers can print the notice to post in a conspicuous place in an area accessible to employees, such as a break room or near employee entrances where other required employment law notices are posted. In addition to posting the notice, employers need to take steps to provide the notice to existing employees no later than December 8 and to all new hires going forward.

Arizona Legislative Update

The general election ballot will include two initiatives, neither of which is exactly low-key.

Proposition 205 is the "Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol" initiative. It allows  individuals 21 years and older to privately use, possess, manufacture, give away, or transport up to 1 ounce of marijuana and grow up to 6 marijuana plants at the individual's residence. A 15% tax, in addition to covering the costs of administrative and enforcement, would be distributed to school districts and charter schools for operations and maintenance and to provide full-day kindergarten. Funds would also be provided to the department of health services for public education.

Proposition 206 seeks to increase the state minimum wage to $10 per hour by 2017 with annual increases to reach $12 by 2020. It also governs accrual of paid sick time and the purposes for which it may be used.

Lessons From Lindgren:

Offset or Digital?

Most firms now have both offset and digital printing equipment and need to make a rational decision about the most economic way to produce a job.  Of course, if it includes variable data it has to go digital or if size or quality requirements can only be met by offset, that's the solution.

When it could go either way, the choice should be based upon only the variable (out-of-pocket) cost items: paper (no make-ready waste on digital), plates, click charges, and differences in time needed to produce the job (using operator wages only).  Depreciation for the offset press, lease payment on the digital, factory and administrative overhead area ll irrelevance since these go on regardless of the work produced.

Special thought should be given to one of digital's unique niches, the short run multi-page project.  A 96 page, 4 color job can be produced in a single pass eliminating a series of folding, cutting and stitching steps.  That's the good news.  The bad news is when the pricing process passes along all of these savings to the client.

When quoting this kind of job, think of it as a conventional offset project with multiple forms.  You may have to discount this price somewhat to get the order, but you don't have to start at the bottom.

As shared in the previous two editions of E-Connects,  color has a remarkable effect on the emotions of humans and if you can understand your customer's connections to certain colors, the effectiveness of your brand's marketing message could significantly increase.

To date we received input on the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink.  In this final analysis, 99 Designs will provide insight into brown, black, white and gray.

Brown - What can brown do for you?  Make your brand appear rugged, masculine and serious.  Brown is very underutilized, so you'll stand out from the competition.

Black - Black is the new black.  Want to look slick, modern and luxurious?  Time to go for black.  Rather be economical and affordable?  Stay away from the dark side.

White - The absence of color.  White is youthful and economical, but can work for almost any brand.  As a neutral color, consider white as a secondary accent.

Gray - Not quite dark, not quite light.  Gray is the middle ground of mature, classic and serious.  Go darker to add mystery.  Go lighter to be more accessible.
