Lessons From Lindgren: What If?
Every company has a financial statement if for no other reason that the IRS wants tax returns.
These financial statements are statements of history. The income statement shows sales, expenses and net income for the last month or year. The balance sheet shows what the firm owns (cash, receivables, equipment, etc.) and it it owes (payables, loans, etc.) and the difference between them - the net worth of the company on the date of the statement.
This is essential information, but it's historical. The challenge is that you do not have the ability to do last month over again. All of the decisions you can make are about the future - what are you going to do today, next month, next year? Thinking about these takes the form of "what if" questions.
What if we buy that new digital press? What if we accept that new account at discounted pricing? What if we lay off some people and work more overtime? The answers to questions like these are different than the numbers in the financial statements because those try to capture all of the aspects of the company.
The answers to the "what if" questions are only focused on those amounts that will change if we take the action. If we buy the digital press what payments are we committed to? What new sales revenue can we generate (net of paper, click charges, wages and commissions)? What can we save on existing work because its fast (avoidable wages)?
Because they're narrowly focused on a particular action, the "what ifs" are usually easy to answer because you only have to think about what will change. Of course, because we're talking about the future, we can't be really sure, but we can be far better than a hunch. If the decision is big enough, we can think about several probable outcomes - what if sales aren't as large as we predicted? What if we can't save any money on existing jobs?
Bob Lindgren is the President and CEO of Printing Industries Association of Southern California, the largest affiliate of PIA. Mr. Lindgren has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in the area of print finance.

If you're unfamiliar with the psychology of color, now is the time to get acquainted because the logo colors you choose could make or break your brand.
It turns out that color has a remarkable effect on the emotions of humans and if you can understand your customer's connections to certain colors, the effectiveness of your brand's marketing message could significantly increase.
Late last year, Entrepreneur.com published a collection of data relating to how color impacts marketing and found the following:
* 93% of purchase judgments are made on visual perception. * Over 84% of consumers admit that color plays a big role in their purchasing decision. * 80% of consumers believe color increases brand recognition.
A host of studies suggest that every color emits specific emotions; the thing is, these emotions can be very wide-ranging. Blue could be associated with serenity but also with strength; Red can be associated with action but also with love and so on. In this and in upcoming editions of E-Connects, 99 designs will provide insight into what your logo colors represent. Red - The universal sign of excitement, passion and anger. Is your brand loud, playful, youthful or modern? Think red. More mature, classic or serious? Red may not be for you. Orange - An invigorating, playful color. Go orange to stand out from the crowd. It's used less often than red, but still packs an energetic punch. Yellow - Accessible, sunshiney friendliness. Yellow exudes cheer, and your brand will radiate an affordable, youthful energy. Nobody puts yellow into a corner.
Next edition green, blue, purple and pink will be analyzed.

Collaboration can be a powerful tool for innovation and imagination in a workplace. It doesn't succeed automatically, though-you have to plan carefully for it to take root. Keep these pointers in mind:
Simplify your structures. Keep the number of people involved in a project as low as possible. Make communication easy between employees and managers, and among different departments.
Encourage networking. Support employees in making contacts outside of their workgroups, and even outside your organization. This will create an environment open to new ideas from any source.
Bring in outsiders. You don't have to rely only on the expertise within your organization. Consultants and other experts can offer good advice that you and your workforce might miss.
Change as necessary. Don't let structures and teams grow old and fossilized. Keep bringing in new people and fresh tactics so everyone stays flexible and ready to try something new.
Reward success. Measure your innovation efforts, and reward employees and teams who contribute to your ongoing success. Everyone will take notice and be more eager to join in the process.
