Sales Tips From Leslie: It's Not Rocket Science Or Brain Surgery
You know that saying 'well, it's not brain surgery' or 'it's not rocket science?' Recently I had a friend that in fact did have brain surgery and it was stressful for a while but turned out with a positive result. I was thinking about the brain surgeon and how much pressure he must feel with that sort of 'job' and how much responsibility he has for the patients' outcome. We are not brain surgeons and I wanted to put some perspective into that expression- our clients depend on us to come through with our respective commitments to them on their projects or products. We must deliver what we agree to as it is just as important to our clients for their needs. In our own selling environments we may just be the 'brain surgeon' to them and are the ones that they need to fix a bad or difficult situation. We may not be in a life or death situation but someone's job may be on the line, our solution may provide them with an important legal standing or a major financial strategy that can impact the client if we make mistakes or miss deadlines. I know that we can make an important difference with our clients even if we are not brain surgeons or rocket scientists!

How long will an ink resist fading?
The light fastness of a litho ink depends on the pigments used; only the ink manufacturer can provide information about a particular ink. Ultraviolet (UV) light causes the pigments to fade; the amount of UV light exposure will have a direct bearing on the amount of fading.
Generally, synthetic pigments fade sooner than natural pigments in UV light. Ink manufacturers are reluctant to give specific time guarantees for light fastness as the amount of UV exposure can vary greatly from location of the printed sample. We have heard of ink manufacturers using automotive pigments for the most demanding fade-resistant inks, but the larger pigment particle size limits the choices available for litho inks. Most manufacturers will not guarantee light fastness of litho inks over one year. We have a fadeometer in our lab that simulates exposure to UV light and can test ink samples for fading.

Teens And Social Media
If you think your kid is checking his or her smartphone every 30 seconds, you may not be far off. A study of more than 200 eighth-graders reported on the CNN website found that the heaviest social media users check the Internet more than 100 times daily, even when they're in school. What are they looking for?- Checking their online posts for comments and "likes": 61 percent.
- Seeing whether friends are doing things without them:36 percent.
- Making sure friends aren't saying mean things about them: 21 percent.
15 percent of teens in the study reported receiving inappropriate photos. And 94 percent of parents were unaware of the amount of fighting that occurs on social media.

Sales Compensation Report Available For Just $99
One major category not covered in the aforementioned Wage and Benefit Survey is sales compensation (with the exception of salaried VPs).
Sp what do top printing sales reps earn across America? How is their commission structured? What percentage of companies pay on a value-add system versus gross sales?
These questions and many others are addressed in The 2016 Sales Compensation Survey of Printing Industries of America, available for purchase now.
Along with surveying compensation methodologies (salary, salary + commission, commission, etc.), we also attempted to gather information about these methods in regards to major production processes (heatset/coldest web; sheetfed; digital; mailing; fulfillment, etc.). Given the number of ancillary services added by many print providers the past decade, and that there have been marked differences between sheetfed and web compensation methods, it was important to differentiate the information gathered. Lessons From Lindgren: Pay The Commission
The almost universal practice in our industry is to pay sales reps on a commission basis. This recognizes the reality that outside sales is challenging work best carried out by highly motivated people - people who don't have to well off, they want to be well off.
The usual approach is to pay the commission when the order is accepted and billed. However, it's tempting to consider the possibility that the client may never pay the bill or they may take a long time to do so. This leads to commission plans that pay commission on receipt of payment. Since generally, the sales rep does not have the job of collector nor have they approved the extension of credit, the practice arguably penalizes the rep for events beyond their control and responsibility.
Also, because payment is now disconnected in an irregular way from the entry and billing of the order, the desired incentive effect is muddied. Finally, the volume of credit losses is usually low (less than 1%) so consideration should be given to the usefulness of non-payment of commission in a credit loss situation.
Speaking of sales commissions, to learn what prevails in the industry in terms of sales compensation, purchased the aforementioned study by WSPA.
Bob Lindgren is the President and CEO of Printing Industries Association of Southern California, the largest affiliate of PIA. Mr. Lindgren has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in the area of print finance.

Quick Lesson In Distortion Printing
Distortion printing is a pretty cool trick if you haven't seen it before. Printing a flat substrate, then vacuum forming/molding the material to create the final product.
Since the image will be bent around an object it needs to be printed in a matter that allows for shrinkage and expansion in certain areas.
By Definition Distortion printing is the process of printing a distorted version of an image onto a sheet of plastic and systematically vacuum forming the sheet on a mold so that specific areas of the printed image appear in corresponding areas of the resulting three-dimensional finished part (source: American Graphic Systems). Obstacles May Impede Completion Of Projects
New projects are necessary to every organization's successful growth, but they rarely happen as smoothly as we'd like. Be prepared to deal with these obstacles:
Falling behind schedule. Deadlines are essential when you're implementing a change, but they're easy to miss due to factors outside your influence - vendors don't provide needed equipment on time, for example, or products take longer than anticipated to develop and manufacture. Build some flexibility into your schedule, and be prepared for delays. Don't punish your people for failures that are beyond their control.
Unexpected detours. No matter how well you plan, you're likely to discover that your efforts are taking you in directions you didn't anticipate: A new product appeals to a different market, for example, or new strategic issues arise that require your attention. Don't ignore new opportunities just because they don't match your original expectations.
Lost momentum. A new product is exciting; once the novelty wears off, enthusiasm can fade. What do do: Periodically review your mission and goals. Remind everyone how important the project is. Talk with people individually to find out what's on their minds and celebrate victories along the way.
Criticism. Any kind of change presents a target for critics. Whether you're doing well or poorly, some people will almost always complain that something's wrong with your strategy. Just remember that people usually criticize change only when it threatens them. Their complaints may be a sign that you're making real progress. Respond to legitimate questions and concerns, but don't let naysayers shake your confidence. Keep your long-range goals in mind, and adjust your efforts only as necessary to achieve them.
