PIA Launches Industry Certification Program
Printing Industries of America has been asked to build certification programs for its members and it has done just that with the unveiling of The Improvement Professional in Print (IPP) certification program.
The IPP certification program validates the expertise of printing industry professionals who help companies achieve operational excellence by using the concepts of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement or other quality systems.
The program is open to individuals with at least two years of experience working for a printing services company who have implemented improvement in the organization. The certification is granted to those who pass a 100-question exam on a spectrum of quality related topics. To help prepare for the exam, applicants can purchase the Body of Knowledge, which includes a set of three books, seven online courses and study portfolio. To find out more about this exciting new certification program, visit the IPP website www.printing.org/IPP.
The site contains a 25-question pre-test that anyone can take, free-of-charge to help gauge their existing knowledge around Continuous Improvement topics. CLICK HERE.

Department of Labor Issues Revised FMLA Poster/Guidance
The federal Department of Labor has released revised employer guidance on the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The law applies to employers with 50 or more employees.
The revised guidance is organized to correspond to the order of events from an employee's leave request to restoration of the employee to the same or equivalent job at the end of the employee's FMLA leave. It also includes a topical index. The new FMLA poster has a new format, but contains the same text as before so employers are not required to post the new version.

Disagree Agreeably
Disagreements at work may be inevitable, but they don't have to destroy your relationships with employees or co-workers. You'll resolve issues quickly and constructively if you avoid these argumentative statements:
Absolutes. Exaggeration is easy: "You never get report to me on time." It's dramatic but it usually provokes hostility and defensiveness. Better: "Your last three reports have been late, and that's not acceptable.
Personal attacks. In the emotion of the moment, people sometimes go after the speaker instead of the statement. "You obviously don't understand this topic at all." An attack isn't very likely to lead to a meeting of minds, though. Better: "I understand what you're saying, but let me explain my point of view.
Questioning motivations. For example, "You're just in favor of restructuring because it means a bigger budget for your department. Stick to facts so you don't alienate the other person. Better: "I see the need for restructuring, but this plan will limit our ability to innovate."
Defensiveness. Being criticized makes many people lash back. "You're just jealous of my idea because you know I'm right," for example. This sounds needlessly hostile. Better: "I think you're wrong, and her are the reasons I think so."
Threats. Anger can lead to unproductive threats. "If you don't watch it, I'll make sure nobody works with you again. The problem with threats is that you have to back them up, which can lead to ugly consequences. In addition, people will start avoiding your in general. Better: Let's try to get past the emotion and solve the problem."

Lessons From Lindgren: Don't Quote And Forget
The sales rep quotes on a project and then waits to see if it turns into an order -wrong! The key to success is to see the quote as the beginning of a dialog.
Talk to the client and try to get feedback - is the quote looking good or not? If it's not because it's way over the budget or a competitor is lower, can we have another look? Getting a second chance is critically important because there is no version of not getting an order that will make us more profitable as even a significant reduction will still leave us with some contribution to overhead.
Of course, when we get a second bite at the apple, simply reducing the price may make the client think that we were ripping them off, so we need a rationale. It's useful to say something like "we got our paper house to give us a break to get the business" or "the production manager figured a better way to run the job" or even "the boss said that you're an important client and he wanted to keep your work."
Bob Lindgren is the President and CEO of Printing Industries Association of Southern California, the largest affiliate of PIA. Mr. Lindgren has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in the area of print finance.

A Common Color Management Mistake
A stable, repeatable, and consistent press is critical to ensuring color management. There are too many times in an offset print environment that mechanical issues with the press give rise to inaccurate and unrepeatable color management. A recent visit to a printer highlighted this perfectly; the printer had to discard all their color management work from the previous week because of inconsistently printed targets. So what are the key features to look at when assessing mechanical performance? Registration and slurring needs to be checked with either a color bar or test form, as is the fan-out on the sheet as it travels through the press. These are all noticeable when wrong; however, there are some less obvious issues that give rise to serious color management challenges, such as ghosting, uneven circumferential ink feed, streaks, mottle, and banding. These will result in artifacts in color management profiles, and they are often only spotted by using appropriate test forms prior to the final color management press run. Questions? Inside the Printing Plant: Special Report on Print Manufacturing by Dr. Ron Davis (PDF)
Over the last couple of decades, printers have focused more and more on value-added services, marketing services expertise, Web-based skillsets, integrated print services, and other non-print revenue sources. Despite these trends, print remains primarily a manufacturing business. In fact, an overwhelming majority of the cost and revenues of a typical printer relate directly to manufacturing the printed product in spite of evolving toward more of a hybrid manufacturing service business model. At the core, printers must continue to embrace a manufacturing mentality, even as they become providers of various non-manufacturing valued-added ancillary services. In this report we focus on this fact by exploring key trends and metrics inside the printing plant, including factory throughput and other aspects of print manufacturing. The report is divided into four major topic areas: - The Big Picture: Overall Trends in Print Manufacturing-a perspective on aggregate developments in print manufacturing over the past few years.
- Manufacturing Metrics by Printing Process-an examination of key factory metrics differentiated by printing processes.
- Manufacturing Metrics by Print Market Segments-a review of key factory metrics sorted by various print market segments.
- Manufacturing Metrics by Size of Plant-an analysis of key factory metrics classified by the number of employees.

Quote For The Week
"Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out."
