Scam Alert!
Printing Industries of America has been made aware of a major scam involving a fraudulent direct marketing agency operating out of Montreal and Toronto. The company purports to represent clients marketing weight loss products. The scam is simple but effective and has claimed a number of victims. The marketing agency contacts printers via their website with a potential win-fall job to produce millions of marketing pieces. The marketing agency literally banks on printers offering a line of credit based on initial feedback from credit references, which are similarly fraudulent. When printers ask for a check to cover postage, it is promptly sent via UPS. The check looks completely official including hologram and printers deposit it thinking all is well, not realizing that any check drawn on a foreign bank account will take 2-3 weeks to validate and collect funds. This is the scam - some companies will drop the printed pieces and mail them before the check clears leaving the printer to cover the postage and printing costs. Sadly a number of PIA members are now out tens of thousands of dollars because of this scam. The United States Postal Service and law enforcement officials are investigating the matter in the US and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been made aware as well. If you are to be contacted via your website or any other means for work by a foreign marketing agency you are not familiar with, proceed with caution. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!- Triple check the validity of the enterprise.
- Never offer to do work without funds clearing in advance.
- Do not accept funds drawn on a foreign account.
- Only accept US money orders or wire transfers approved by your bank, ideally into a separate account from your operating account.
If you believe you have been a victim of a similar crime, contact local law enforcement officials immediately.

New Dynamic Financial Ratios Help You Evaluate Your Company's Health
If you've ever been curious to see how your firm stacks up against similar businesses, Printing Industries of America's Ratios Studies are a tried-and-true resource for comparing similar printers and helping companies determine what parts of their operation are most in need of a tune-up. The Ratios have long been a compilation of accurate financial information from hundreds of printing and related graphic arts firms. They can be a valuable financial benchmarking tool and include information about assets, liabilities, working capital, salaries, sales, and profits.
In addition to the look-under-the-hood financial details PIA has provided for almost a century, the new Dynamic Ratios provide an online, interactive version of the Ratios study. Additional new features include:
New Shorter Survey Option: While we will still offer members the option to fill out the traditional 114-line survey, we are now offering a condensed version. This new shorter version offers a 70% reduction in required information. Now printers need only provide 32 line items to participate.
New Secure Interactive Dashboard: Printers will have instant access from any device to industry financial and operating averages and profit-leader benchmarks. Access to this information will be available 24/7.
New Peer Group Report: The online tool will allow members to create customized peer group reports-by printing processes, products and market segments, firm size, and other variables. In addition, printers will have the option to choose which printers they would like to sync with. The online dashboard will also show this information 24/7. It is recommended that those printing companies that are looking to sync up fill out the longer survey form in order to get the most out of the new Dynamic Ratios.
New Instant Graphics: These will provide easy-to-understand information. The new quartile graphics allow every company to see graphically their company's status compared to their peer group or to the industry financial and operating averages.
New Focus on Key Performance Metrics: This will help printers simplify management decisions. For example, we will now focus on items such as gross profit as a percentage of sales, sales per employee, value added per factory employee, and other important variables. Legacy Reports and Database: Printers will still have access to the traditional reports (PDF or printed) and will be able to receive them if they so choose.
A Web-Based Survey: In the past we have also used this as acollection process. There will be a new focus this year on the online portion. However, we will still have Excel versions and PDF versions of the short and long forms that can be downloaded and filled out.
Trend Analysis between Years: For every year that a printer participated in the survey in the past, you will be able to receive a trend analysis via graphics. If you have ever been curious as to how your firm does from year to year in one metric, especially after implementing new changes, we can provide you with the graphics needed to easily understand if the direction your company has taken has made a difference.

Sales Tips From Leslie
Take the best of the past to create the future. The world is full of shiny new toys and methods. It's easy for humanity to get lost in the glitz and glamour of modern technology. Successful people embrace modern tools for communication efficiency and continue to use traditional and rare methods like handwritten thank-you notes to enhance connections.
Don't be a lemming. If you are always heading the same direction as everyone else, you may move forward, but you'll have little control of your destiny. Successful people often figure out what everyone else does only to do the opposite, which many times puts them ahead of the pack.
Keep a thick skin about rejection. For many each no is like taking a punch in the gut or a slap in the face. The way to get up and keep going is to remember that it's just business. Successful people know that the key to getting life's few brilliant "yeses" is to positively cope with the many "noes" you get on the way to receiving them.
Make others feel important. One of the greatest craving of most people today is recognition. Unfortunately, so many people are so tightly focused on their own status and problems they are ignorant to the needs of others. Successful people recognize, support and encourage others on their journey, which brings synergy, energy and satisfaction to all involved.
Strive for more. Sales Super Star, Tom Hopkin's overall philosophy for success can be best summed up by his commitment on how to live life: "I commit to learn more, thus I'll serve more, thus I'll build more, thus I'll earn more, thus I'll save more, thus I'll be able to bless others by giving more."

Lessons From Lindgren: Got Anything To Quote On?
Many sales reps say this every day as it seems like the way to start a relationship. The problem is that nothing is being offered to the prospect except, possibly, a low bid. The rep asking the question has no understanding of the prospect's business nor the role that print could have in its success.
Consider the difference when the rep has done their homework and instead of asking to quote on the status quo begins by suggesting a change in the prospect's marketing strategy: look at more powerful direct mail using variable data or perhaps augmented reality, look a package designs that scream "buy me" when they're sitting on the shelf, look at the power of print to drive interested buyers to the prospect's website, etc.
It takes time and effort both to learn about the prospect's business and then get to talk to the right people (not the purchasing agent), but it pays off big. It can also be leveraged as learning about one prospect makes it easier to work with other prospects in the same business. Also, if the rep clicks with one prospect in this way, it's easy to ask them for referrals to other similar firms that they probably know.

After surveying workers to determine their level of satisfaction, don't drop the ball with the results. Follow this checklist for change:
Meet with employees to explain the purpose of the survey and what it measures.
Distribute copies of the overall survey results.
Take each item in the survey and discuss the results in detail, particularly as they relate to your team or department.
Seek worker input in selecting two or three key items to prioritize over the next year.
Brainstorm an action plan for dealing with your key items.
Go forward with the plan, follow up regularly on its progress.
