Denver Printers Celebrate At Awards Night
|
| |
Following in the footsteps of the uber-successful awards night held at Rustler's Rooste in Phoenix on April 7th, the Denver program was held last week at the downtown Embassy Suites Hotel in Denver .The elegant affair recognized the Colorado winners in the regional competition where printers from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming were all encouraged to participate. Multiple award winners included C & D Printing, Henry Wurst, Publication Printers, and Vision Graphics, which took home both the Best of Show and People's Choice Awards. The evening also featured the presentation of several Employee Recognition Awards. Special thanks once again to all of the event sponsors (see below) and the amazing team at ASU, including Cathy Skoglund and Stetson Finch for all of their work on the event. The complete list of winners will soon be posted on the WSPA Website. A printed showcase piece featuring all of the winners will also be sent to all members. It's never too early to start putting aside your best pieces of 2016 for next year's competition!

Arm Your Company And Your Customers With Pro Print Facts
92% - Consumers are more likely to notice and read direct mail (53%) than email (26%), and 92% say they get ideas for shopping trips from printed material. 3x - Direct mail appeals garner 3 times more charitable donations than emailed appeals. 6x - Direct mail outperforms all digital channels combined by nearly 600%. 82% - Consumers on average ignore 82% of online ads, studies show. And the effort is working as we continue to reach out to designers, print buyers, and purchasing agents. The latest addition to this multi-faceted program is a six-part "Be Prepared" poster series aimed at you, the printer. It will give you strong, fact-based responses to address common objections you hear about print. Labor Relations Bill Introduced To Block Union "Persuader" Rule
Pro-print, pro-business action took place in the US House last month as Representative Bradley Byrne (R-AL) introduced H.J. Res. 87, a bill to use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to block the recently issued, highly controversial "persuader" rule.
The new regulation would make it more difficult for printing company owners to communicate with employees regarding information related to union organizing.
More than a dozen GOP members of the House Education & Workforce Committee joined Byrne in this action. Under the CRA, Congress can use the full force of the law to block a federal agency from implementing a rule (or reissuing another one that is considered "substantially similar.")

Lessons From Lindgren: We Got A Better Quote - Now What?
This is not what we want to hear from a client. When we do hear it, we should constructively react. If we have a good relationship, asking to see the other quote is doable. We may find hat the quote is based on a a different set of specs and client expectations than we were working with, which opens the door to showing why the comparison isn't correct and may lead to an ugly surprise.
We may even be able to suggest a new approach to solving the client's problem which will give us another shot. Finally, this is an opportunity to leverage the fact that we're the known quantity and the competition isn't, so why should the client take a chance of the job going wrong?
Bob Lindgren is the President and CEO of Printing Industries Association of Southern California, the largest affiliate of PIA. Mr. Lindgren has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in the area of print finance.

Improve Your Plant Tours
The plant tour is a staple of the sales process. The client gets a walk through and we point out the big press, the neat plant, the CSRs etc. That's standard operating procedure, but it's missing an opportunity - your people.
Everyone likes to talk about what they do and even brag about it. Think of having your folks in the plant sharing what they do to get the jobs out right and on time. Think of CSRs telling war stories about how they solved last minute problems. Think of your HR person talking about how your hire and train your people. Going the extra mile may make all the difference!

Gossip
Many managers worry about the destructive impact of gossip on employee morale and productivity. If you want to set up a "no gossip" policy in your workplace, start by defining what gossip is and what it isn't.
For your purposes, define gossip as negative comments about a co-worker delivered outside of hi or her hearing. Positive comments aren't gossip, and neither is the latest celebrity scandal.
Employees and managers alike should make a rule of discussing negative performance only with the person in question, not behind their back with someone else. With this rule in place, you and your employees should do a better job of knowing what not to say.
