Ask The Tech Experts
Ask The Tech Experts is a resource of PIA's Center for Technology and Research that features the responses to questions covering a wide gamut of topics. If you would like to ask a technical question, simply email Dillon Mooney at dmooney@printing.org or call PIA's toll-free hotline at 1-800-910-4283. I have heard of CxF/X-4. What is it used for?
CxF/X-4 is a color exchange format that is based on ISO 17972, which is used to define a spot color throughout the whole production workflow. The use by brand owners increases the consistency of spot color matching while providing ink manufacturers the data to provide inks that achieve the desired color. This then allows standardized colors to be produced within single, or access multiple print facilities and processes. How do I reduce the effect of chalking on my web press?
Chalking occurs when some of the dried printed ink rubs off the surface of the paper exposing the paper surface with the pigment not bonding to the surface of the paper. This should not be confused with the ink not drying. Typically, the ink vehicle is absorbed into the stock, not leaving enough on the paper's surface to bind the pigments. This can be caused by too-absorbent paper or the ink formulation. This can also be an effect of too high a drier temperature or else poor pigment wetting in the ink.

When you're over-stressed your employees can feel it - and their stress levels will probably rise accordingly.
Stay calm by remembering these four tips:
1. Use technology wisely. All those gadgets on your desk are meant to make life easier. But they won't do that unless you know how to use them efficiently. For example, turn off the signal that alerts you to incoming emails and learn how to set up email folders that sort your messages as they come in. Control your technology instead of letting it run your life.
2. Don't try to do it all. You've got only so many hours in a day, so don't spend them on unproductive activities. Learn to delegate tasks to others - or eliminate nonessential ones altogether.
3. Limit meetings. Nothing eats into a workday like a full slate of meetings. Eliminate those you can, and make sure the meetings you do hold start and end on time.
4. Learn to say no. You don't have to do everything an employee or co-worker asks. Keep track of your time and priorities so you can easily turn down requests that will get in the way of doing your job well.

Speaking Of Emails...Make Them Effective!
Your goal with every email message is to share information quickly, whether you're asking for a sale, setting up a meeting, or passing along feedback. Focus on these points to get your message across efficiently: - Subject line. Describe the point of your message in as few words as possible.
- Opening line. Get to the point in the first sentence.
- Length. Don't go on too long. Attach supporting documents if necessary instead of dumping a page of text into your message.
- Request. If you are asking for something, limit yourself to one simple item that the recipient can read and respond to quickly.

Lessons From Lindgren: Quoting The Specs
It's easy to assume that all the clients care about is the price, because that's all you hear. Unfortunately, if you're quoting the exact specs, you're making it impossible for them to focus on anything except the price. If the client is into results, quote a version that is better than they're proposing along with an explanation of the power of your approach. Remember that people buy print not as an end in itself, but as a means to get a message out or sell a product. If your idea is built around their objective, the price is in the background! Bob Lindgren is the President and CEO of Printing Industries Association of Southern California, the largest affiliate of PIA. Mr. Lindgren has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in the area of print finance.

Last Chance To Participate In 2016 Sales Compensation Survey
One of the most frequently asked questions by printing industry executives revolves around sales compensation. Should it be commission? Based on gross sales? Value-Added? What is an appropriate percentage for sheetfed? Digital? More importantly, what are my peers doing? Over the next 30 days, WSPA will conduct a sales compensation survey in conjunction with Printing Industries of America and its Affiliates across the United States. The result will be the industry's most comprehensive sales compensation survey.
The cost? Participating companies receive the survey results for FREE! This is a $250 value ($500 for nonmembers). To participate, you simply download the following Excel questionnaire by CLICKING HERE.
