PIA Members Pack Some Punch

Printing Industries of America's Chief Economist Dr. Ron Davis recently crunched some numbers to emphasize the power of PIA membership. His updated analysis of the association's printer member aggregates for total employees and total shipments demonstrate just how significant the organization's membership base is.

Davis estimates indicate that PIA member printers employ approximately 420,000 workers. In terms of total annual printing shipments, PIA members produce around $77 billion in printed products and services.  Pretty impressive!

In flexographic printing I am starting to see ghosting appear in the prints.  Why?

This is often a featured caused by a dirty anilox roll.  In the first instance, clean the anilox roll.

How do I apply scents using an offset press?

Scented coatings consist of encapsulated scents that are included typically in a coating or varnish.  These come in a wide array of predefined scents, and in certain instances, new scents can be created by the manufacturer.  They are applied typically on the last printing unit or the coating unit using either a transfer blanket or flexo printing plate.  Solutions are available for conventional and UV applications.

What is the formula for web tension on a web press?

A general formula wold be: normal paper 6 lbs per linear inch; board 10 lbs per inch; newsprint 3 lbs per inch.  If you are using metric settings on our web press here is a conversion - 1 pound = 0.453592 kilograms.
Lessons From Lindgren: Yes You Can Raise Prices!

Raise your prices?  In the face of all of the competition?  You must be joking?  But according to Bob Lindgren, it's easier than you think.

Your pricing process begins with your estimating software, so begin with making small adjustments in the factors in the system - the $200/hour press is now $208/hour, etc. When you do this make the changes small and do it without sharing the change with the sales reps (as they are already spooked by the competition) and certainly not with the clients.  Remember that the estimating system is the starting point of the price setting process which should focus on getting the order for as much as the client will pay.  All that you are doing is re-basing that process slightly upward and chances are that it will produce additional revenue with minimum pain.  Those additional dollars are pure profit as the cost of product is unchanged.  Remember also that we are custom manufacturers and while the estimating software thinks that all 32 page, four color brochures are the same, they look different and have different purposes.  That is a terrific advantage for us as it makes comparison difficult for the client.

Bob Lindgren is the President and CEO of Printing Industries Association of Southern California, the largest affiliate of PIA. Mr. Lindgren has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in the area of print finance.

  • Be widely recognized as having made a major contribution to the graphic arts industry
  • Supported educational programs within the community as they relate to graphic arts
  • Worked to maintain and improve the image of the industry.

Cadillac Health Care Tax Delayed Until 2020

Just before the holidays, President Obama signed a tax bill that pushes back the start of the Cadillac Health Care Tax from 2018 to 2020. Nearly all stakeholders (Republicans, Democrats, employers, unions, etc.) were for the delay. Employers and Republicans wanted an outright repeal.  The Cadillac Tax is a 40 percent tax on employers who offer premium health insurance plans that exceed specified high-cost limits ($10,200 for individuals and $27,000 for families). The 40 percent tax applies to the amount above the cost threshold.
Recognize Your Key Employees

We all know that our people are our greatest assets yet how often do we let them know just how valuable they are - particularly in front of their peers?

Once again, this year's Print Excellence Awards events will also feature the WSPA Employee Recognition Awards where member companies can single out exceptional performance by team members.  These awards were a huge hit last year and for good reason - everyone likes a pat on the back in front of their peers.

Why not recognize someone who has made a difference in your shop and nominate them for a WSPA Employee Recognition Award?  The awards are only $50 each with recipients receiving a beautiful certificate at the Print Excellence Awards ceremonies to be held in Phoenix (April 7 - Rustler's Rooste) and Denver (April 28 - Embassy Suites Downtown).

You can download nomination forms HERE.

Deadline for nominations is March 15, 2016
