Print Still Dominates!

It is rare for an executive in the publishing industry, when contemplating the next five years, to talk positively about print. Digital dominates industry conversations as publishers seek to transform their businesses and engage an audience of connected, if fickle, readers.

Yet according to a recent publishing forecast, which quantifies the prospects for the global consumer publishing industry in the next five years, the resilience of print, despite the growth of mobile and digital consumption, may still be underestimated.

Digital is growing, but not as fast as some might think. At an aggregated level, combining revenues from the newspaper, book, and magazine industries across more than 50 markets worldwide,  just 24% of revenue will come from digital in 2020, up from 14% in 2015.
Digital revenues from publishing will grow at a CAGR of 13% to reach US$74bn in 2020, up from US$41bn in 2015.

But, in terms of both consumer and advertiser spend, despite a decline in print revenue and all the investment in (and noise around) digital, print will continue to dominate

So printing presses won't be closing anytime soon, even in the US and the UK, where the transition to digital is more rapid. Even in these two markets, digital will still only account for a minority of overall revenue in 2020, with shares of 42% and 37%, respectively.

Denver Printers Talk M & A

Denver area printers gathered last week at a special session covering mergers and acquisitions in the industry, featuring Paul Reilly of New Direction Partners.

Mr. Reilly shared how companies can prepare themselves for acquisition and outlined the current multiple rates of EBITA within the industry.

Participants will receive a complimentary follow up evaluation of their companies - a value of almost $3,000.   WSPA thanks Veritiv for sponsoring the event at its Denver facility.

11 Great Interview Questions

One of the best ways to tell if applicants have the skills to perform specific tasks is to directly ask how they've used those skills in the past. These sample questions can help hiring managers spot 11 important "soft" skills:

1. Initiative. "Tell me about a time you did more than was required in your job."

2. Decisions-making. "Describe a work-related problem you had to face recently. What procedures did you use to deal with it?"

3. Communication. "Describe when you had to pitch a proposal. How did you do? Why do you think it went that way?"

4. Humility. "Tell us about a time you made a whopper of a work blunder, and had a good laugh about it afterward."

5.Integrity.  "Should some rules be obeyed more than others?"

6. Leadership. "Describe how you solved someone else's problem."

7. Persuasiveness. "What was the best idea you've ever sold to a superior? How did you do it?"

8. Planning. "How do you determine your top priorities?"

9. Sales. "What's the best way to find new prospects?"

10. Supervision. "What is the No. 1 thing that distinguishes a superior employee from a typical one?"

11. Technical skills. "What is the most important development in your field today? What impact do you think it will have?"

Lessons from Lindgren:
Estimating System: Friend Or Foe

Every firm has an estimating system - from a sophisticated software package to scratches on the back of an envelope or napkin.

Ostensibly, the purpose of the estimate is to identify the "cost" of producing a job but in reality, it's the pricing tool.  As such, the number hopefully represents all of the elements in the business from the paper through to the owner's new car.

Under the hood, the reality is that when a job is produced, the paper, any buy-outs, sales commission (if any) and perhaps the wages of the production people (if they had to work overtime) must be paid.  In a commercial printing plant this amounts to about 60 percent of the average sales dollar.  Thus, around $600 is spent to produce a job that bills for $1,000.

If this sounds like what's going on in your company (you can check a range of jobs to see) then it has important implications for your thinking.  For example, there are times when you can get $1,100 for that normal $1,0000 job.  This is usually a cause for celebration and perhaps, a reward for the sales rep.  There are other times when competition offers to do it for $900 and you pass it up because you don't want to lose money.

The reality is that in the first case you were $100 better off than expected, but in the second, you passed up $300 ($900 less the $600 to produce the job).  If you think about this, there's more power in getting the dollars you're passing up than pressing for more margin.

Are Your Property Limits Accurate?

Imagine you get that middle-of-the-night call every business owner dreads: There's smoke coming from the roof at your main location. When you arrive, the entire building is in flames. The fire gets put out shortly after dawn, but it's evident the fire and water damage is extensive.

That shiny new press is now scrap, the shelves, light fixtures, inventory, carpet, family photos-anything and everything-ruined.

Now imagine finding out that, while the walls and roof were insured at their full replacement value, not much else was. Not calculating replacement value for property contents is a costly mistake some business owners make when valuing their business insurance limits. Don't be one of them!

When discussing insurance values with your provider, be sure you include anything that could affect value: new machines or equipment, inventory (raw material, in-process and finished product, etc.), property of others, remodels, etc. And, don't forget to consider inflation and other valuation factors. The amount you have on your balance sheet or the item's cost new may not be an accurate reflection of your contents' replacement costs. Remember, you probably had time to shop around and buy the items at the best possible price, but you won't have that luxury when you need to get your business back up and running as fast as possible.

Determining the replacement cost of your business personal property (contents) is involved, and it requires your time and expertise. Yes, it may be time-consuming to do a walk-through to list floor-to-ceiling contents and determine accurate costs, but it is the best way to calculate true value to help ensure you're adequately covered if you have a claim. Federated Insurance uses one of the finest building value estimation tools in the marketplace to help business owners determine adequate values. Doing what you can to make sure you are insured to value offers an added layer of peace of mind.

The extra time spent now will be much appreciated in the unfortunate event of a loss. And, to protect all your hard work, you will want to store the documentation in a safe, off-site location to make sure you can readily access it when it's needed most.
