Sales Tips From Leslie
Sales professional Leslie Groene offers three sales tips this week.
1. Sell on the buyer's timeline. Don't force prospects to buy on your timeline. You won't have to be pushy if you maintain a pipeline full of prospects in various stages of the buying process. That way, you'll have prospects ready to close - on their terms - each and every month.
2. "No" isn't a bad thing. Keep in mind that "no" is better than "maybe." When prospects disqualify themselves, you have more time to spend on better fit opportunities.
3. Reps who listen, sell. How will you be able to put together a solution for your prospect if you don't truly listen to and understand their needs? Ask questions and carefully listen to your buyer's answers so you know how to best help them.

15 Percent of Americans Don't Use The Internet
We think that everyone is on the web but this actually isn't true. A recent study by Pew Research found that 15 percent of American adults do no use the Internet. This is down substantially from 2000 when half of all adults in the country weren't online but it's still a far cry from a truly connected America. Pew found that there are several reasons why some Americans are not online. Some find the Internet too difficult to use, some don't have access to broadband or a computer, some cannot afford to go online and others said they are too old to use the service. Not surprisingly those over 65 years of age are the least likely to go online. But Pew's research also shows a deep inequality. A quarter of Americans who make less than $30,000 a year do not use the Internet, while a third of adults with less than a high school education do.

What is the recommended shelf life for a sheetfed ink?We recommend following the manufacturer's recommendation. The shelf life of a sheetfed ink is typically one year. After one year some ink dryers in the ink may lose effectiveness, resulting in lower ink drying times. Inks should have the dates received written on the cans and you should rotate the stock, using older ink first. What Is The Difference Between Linting and Picking?Linting is the transfer of loosely bonded paper surface fibers to the blanket, predominantly with uncoated papers. There may be only a few of these on a sheet, and the paper could well have good pick resistance. Picking is the separation of the paper fibers from the surface due to the ink tack exceeding the paper surface strength. If my paper contains optical brightening agents (OBAs) how should I measure it to ensure I match the correct color? The ideal solution would be to use one of the M1 measurement instruments that are available from many of the spectrophotometer manufacturers. However, it is critically important that you match both the measurement and viewing conditions to the same standard to maintain predictability and consistency between what you see and measure.

If You Can't Measure It, You Can't Control It! In an ideal pressroom environment, nothing would go wrong and you'd get consistently accurate jobs from your offset press. Unfortunately, we don't work in this imaginary perfect pressroom. As a result we sometimes end up wasting materials and losing time. Your best bet is to learn more and be prepared to handle problems the moment they arise. There are useful training and education tools available that will help you stop wasting and start earning more profits. Here are Five Best Bets for Your Offset Press: (1) When troubleshooting on a lithographic process, first and most importantly, be sure to accurately identify the problem. Many printers resort to excuses like "These inks should run on any stock," or "We don't have time to test things," rather than trying to identify the root cause. When you know the problem, you can find a solution and help avoid a future incident. (2) Determine all possible causes of the problem, such as press, materials, or human error. Ask what has changed and quickly organize your data to verify potential causes. (3) Analyze the plate scum line and determine if you have the proper ink and water balance. The scum line will tell you if your: - Skewing roller is set properly
- Metering roller is performing well
- Dampening system is even from side to side
(4) Get an accurate measurement of fountain solution, blankets, and rollers. With the many interactions and variables on the offset press, you need to have the right instruments: - Meters measuring p/H and conductivity assure that the fountain solution has been mixed properly and will indicate when the fountain solution has become contaminated and should be changed to avoid print quality deterioration.
- A roller durometer indicates when the ink or dampening roller has become too hard, which could cause roller streaks.
- Regular measurements of the blanket with a packing gauge will indicate when a blanket has lost pressure due to compression set and needs repacked.
- Measurements with a dead weight micrometer confirm that the blanket has been made to proper specifications.
- Always remember: If you can't measure it, you can't control it!
(5) When a printing problem arises, determine the root cause by testing your paper and ink. These are some of the tests to perform: - Inkometer readings measure if the ink tack sequence is correct for proper wet ink trapping.
- Grindometer measurents ensure that the paper has been milled properly.
- Calibrate abrasion testers indicate that the inks have set and will have the proper scuff resistance and durability that your customer will be pleased with.
