Millennial Generation and B2B Sales

One of the concerns voiced frequently by many is the communication changes occurring between generations.  Specifically as it applies to the Millennials who are now beginning to enter the workforce and are much more reliant on digital technology than their predecessors. Here's what "Marketing Profs" had to say in an online article titled "B2B Buying: Millennials vs. Gen X and Baby Boomers."

"Millennials B2B buyers want to interact directly with vendors' representatives far more than Gen X or Baby Boomers buyers when researching products and services, according to a recent report from IBM.

The report was based on data from a survey of 704 people who influence or are responsible for B2B purchasing decisions of $10,000 or more for their company. Respondents came from 12 countries and 6 industries.

The researchers compared the responses of Millennial employees (born 1980-1993) with those of Gen X (born 1965-1979) and Baby Boomers (born 1954-1964). Millennial buyers rely most heavily on information provided by vendors when researching products and services, the analysis found.

In contrast, Gen X buyers rely most on third-party articles, blogs, reviews to research vendors, and Baby Boomers rely most on tradeshows."

Welcome Interruptions - Some of the Time

You've developed the discipline to say no to interruptions that threaten to distract you from completing the day's planned tasks. But don't be too quick to routinely turn away everyone who disrupts your schedule.

First, consider how each request connects to your big picture goals. If your needs or your organization's goals will be better served by shifting focus, then by all means stop what you're doing to work on the new issue. If not, explain your scheduling dilemma and offer to help at a more opportune time.

Sales Guru Leslie Groene says Setting a Sales Goal is Like Using a Recipe

Imagine that you want to make your favorite dish, maybe mac and cheese, marinated beef, guacamole, or many other great foods. You would use a recipe to make sure the ingredients are all there and in the correct propositions as well as following the cooking instructions.

Consider that setting meaningful yearly sales goals as the same sort of equation: add current account projected revenue along with new account revenue, mix in effective use of selling tools, a large quantity of relationship development and a splash of luck with enough time for all of it to come together.

So take a look at your revenue from last year by account. Consider what is currently going on in each account, what will happen throughout the year and 'project' a revenue amount that you can get from that account. Then build a prospect list and assign each 'target' a revenue goal for the year. When you combine these numbers, you should have the revenue goal that you are shooting for the current year.

It is important to allow the right amount of time to reach your goal (just like when you cook your recipe). So divide your revenue goal into 12 month segments and then you have a manageable monthly goal.

What you are doing is creating a goal for the current year based on account performance from the past combined with your strategies on growing and maintaining these revenue levels.

Graphic Communications Union Loses Another 2,300 Members

Earlier this month financial reports filed by the Graphic Communications Conference/Teamsters revealed that the union lost 2,305 members in 2014.  The union is now down to 30,958 members. In 2004, just before the union merged with the Teamsters, the union had 71,740 members.  The decline can be mostly attributed to plant closings and some reduced manning requirements on equipment.  However, they are not going out without a fight.  The new NLRB "Ambush" election rule change takes effect April 14th and we have seen renewed signs of union activity. If you suspect any union organizing at your plant please contact Jim Kyger of PIA's HR Department at 1-800-910-4283 (ext. 503).  For more information CLICK HERE.

Quote For The Week

"The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases:  If it moves, tax it.  If it keeps moving, regulate it.  And if it stops moving, subsidize it."
