5 Reliable Sources for FREE Fonts

Fonts are the most fundamental and powerful elements in a designer's arsenal. Luckily, there are variety of places online where you can find free fonts. Some sites provide downloadable font files that you can use on your computer and in printed pieces. Other sites provide what are known as web fonts, snippets of code that you can add to a website. Check out the list below for some sites providing free fonts:

Font Squirrel
Font Squirrel is a popular resource for free, commercial-use fonts. Font Squirrel's collection is easy to search and they frequently update their lists of the most popular fonts.

FontStruct
FontStruct is a free font-building tool sponsored by FontShop. The site lets users build fonts out of geometrical shapes through a graphical editor. FontStruct generates TrueType fonts which can be used in Mac or Windows environments. Users are encouraged to share their creations with other users.

UrbanFonts
UrbanFonts has free fonts, premium fonts, and free dingbats. Most fonts on this site are freeware, while some are shareware. Some fonts provided are trial versions of full versions and may not allow embedding unless a commercial license is purchased or may contain a limited character set.

Google Fonts
Google Fonts is a repository for web fonts that runs on Google's servers. All of the fonts are open ssource. Users can share fonts, customize fonts for personal use, or work with the original creator to modify them. The fonts can be used privately or commercially.

Adobe Edge Web Fonts

Edge Web Fonts provides access to a web font library consisting of contributions from Adobe, Google, and various designers. Users select the fonts they want to use on their websites and copy a line of JavaScript into their sites' HTML code to begin using them in their sites CSS. Edge Web Fonts is powered by Typekit, a commercial web font service from Adobe.

When You've Messed Up

The true measure of a great communicator is the ability to clean up the mess when everything goes wrong, whether it's inadvertently sending a sensitive email to the wrong recipients, giving a speech citing incorrect data, or publicly declaring support for a colleague who turns out to be a crook.  It is possible to recover from such damaging mistakes.  Follow these tips for a rapid recovery.

Act Promptly

Unfortunately, people often compound their mistakes by hoping they will go away or waffling about how to handle them.  the best course - quickly acknowledge your error and make amends in a way that is equal to the offense.  For instance, if you've publicly chastised an employee without cause, you should make a public apology.

Be Humble

People who defiantly refuse to admit their own faults arouse anger and criticism.  But when you're humble enough to see forgiveness, you inspire others to put themselves in your shoes and see things from your perspective.  Everyone makes mistakes and most people are willing to forgive those who have the character to ask.

Move On

Once you've made your apologies and asked to be forgiven, drop the subject and move on.  Continuing to flog yourself for your misstep will only serve to keep the issue alive and leave you vulnerable to further criticism.  You're not the first to make a mistake, and you won't be the last.  People may gossip about your faux pas for a while, but if you get over it yourself, everyone else will too.
