 Print May Cost More But...
Some marketing executives don't want designers to learn about/use print because they think that print is more expensive than e-marketing. While on the surface that is a true statement, focusing simply on the cost is an example of the right answer to the wrong question. The question isn't which costs less; the question is which better targets an audience and gets results? And the answer to that question is most definitely PRINT.
Focusing on results is the key to print continuing to have a place in the conversation. Print stands out in a crowded field of electronic communication, and of course it is not destroying the environment (Check out PIA's Value of Print Campaign, PrintGrowsTrees.org, and ChoosePrint.org for more facts and case studies on that issue!) The challenge the printing industry has is educating clients ( for example, marketing execs) about these truths. Remember, you can't credibly sell "cheap," but you CAN sell what all prospects and clients really need and want: results!

Five Things To Avoid Saying in a Sales Call
1. Trust me. Trust must be earned, and this takes time.
2. Are you the decision maker? Whether the answer is "yes" or "no," this question can be insulting.
3. Would you agree with that? Many won't feel comfortable saying "no," as this will feel very confrontational.
4. Nobody can sell this cheaper than I can. Really?
5. What you need is... Even if you're right, you'll come across as arrogant and presumptuous.

 Keeping Tabs on Critical Jobs
You don't always have time to examine all the details when managing a special project. You depend on your employees to keep you up to date and sometimes they don't. To avoid being caught flat-footed when a project hits a snag, you need to understand why employees may not report potential problems:
Fear. They may be afraid of your reaction to bad news. Make a point of remaining clam and dealing with the problem instead of attacking the messenger.
Optimism. Some employees may believe that the problem is, well, no problem. Talk to your team about what kinds of circumstances require them to notify you, whether or not they believe they can handle the problem on their own.
Being ignored. If you or other leaders don't respond promptly to reports, employees won't feel any urgency about sharing news, good or bad. Get in the habit of acknowledging employees and acting on their information in a timely manner.

Safety is Serious Business Safety in the workplace is no laughing matter and should always be a priority for any printing company. But as this image reveals, practicing what one preaches is clearly a challenge for some. Welcome to a new photo feature in E-Connects called, Are You Kidding Me? Each week incredible photos will be shared on just how lax companies can be when it comes to safety. The goal - to keep a safe work environment front and center on the minds of all of your employees. Interested in evaluating just how safe your workplace is? Have a safety audit conducted by Printing Industries of America. Not only can this give you peace of mind, it could potentially save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars should you ever be inspected by OSHA.
