Arizona Tweaks Unemployment Terminology
Last month, Arizona passed a law that removes "dismissal pay" from the state's unemployment insurance law. Instead, the term "severance pay" now includes all amounts that an employer pays to an employee due to the employee's resignation, termination, or participation in an exit incentive program or inclusion in a reduction in force or in consideration for the employee's release of actual or potential claims for the termination of employment. Severance pay does not include any amounts that the employer pays for health benefits or pursuant to any employee benefit plan.

Medical Marijuana Approved in New Mexico
Agreeing with a workers' compensation judge (WCJ) that New Mexico's Compensation Act and its attendant regulations authorize reimbursement for medical marijuana, a state appeals court affirmed the judge's order requiring an employer to reimburse an injured employee for medical marijuana used under the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Act.
Rejecting the argument that the judge's order was contrary to federal public policy, the court noted that the Department of Justice has recently offered "equivocal statements" about state laws allowing marijuana use for medical and even recreational purposes, and has even informed the governors of two states that voted to legalize possession of the drug and regulate its production and distribution that it would defer its right to challenge those laws (Vialpando v Ben's Automotive Services, May 19, 2014, Weschsler, J).

Hacking Passwords: Simple As 123456 This sequential number string - easy to type and easy to remember - is the top log-in password used by Americans, according to password management firm SplashData. The second most popular password? Believe it or not, the word "Password" itself. Rounding out the top five are 12345678, qwerty, and abc123. If you or your employees are using these passwords, they could be virtually offering your organization's data to hackers. Advice: Require employee log-ins to be at least eight (8) characters, contain at least one capital letter and one number. Test the quality of passwords at www.passwordmeter.com
