Brian Newton
It is with sad hearts that we share the news that Brian Newton lost his battle with cancer on January 22, 2017. He fought hard for two-and-a-half years, and was able to continue working for RMTC as much as he could. Brian graduated from Flagler College, and started teaching Middle School Science at the Florida School for the Deaf. He joined RMTC in July 2009. Brian brought his expertise, along with lots of laughter and levity to meetings and conferences, and will be greatly missed! If you would like to do so, you can make a donation to help with Brian's daughter's education.

Effective Practices for Transition for Students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and DeafTEC Project Access
Friday, February 24, 2017, 8:00 AM-4:30PM and
Saturday, February 25, 2017, 9:00-12:00
The Resource Materials and Technology Center for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing is pleased to announce registration is now open for a unique collaborative training between RMTC-D/HH, DeafTEC, and Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ).
The topic of transition was chosen for teachers to investigate STEM opportunities and experiences to share with students to spark their interest in STEM careers. In addition, teachers will learn how to support students in transitioning to postsecondary education.
Moving students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing toward STEM -
In the U.S., individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing attend college at almost the same rate as hearing people, but graduate at a much lower rate. 60% of students who are deaf/hard of hearing attend some college compared to 68% of hearing people, but only 24% of students who are deaf or hard of hearing graduate compared to a graduation rate of 40% for hearing students. DeafTEC provides resources for students, teachers, parents, and counselors for improving those percentage rates for graduation. But it isn't enough to just improve graduation rates in general; graduating more students in STEM will improve the earning potential of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, and shrink the earning gap with hearing workers. https://www.deaftec.org/why-stem-deaf-and-hard-hearing-students
Intended Audience:
- Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing
- Families
- College Professors
- General Education Middle and High School Teachers
- Inclusion Specialists

Health Care Careers Exploration Camp at NTID
The healthcare field is one of the fastest growing employment fields today. If you are working with deaf or hard-of-hearing college-bound students who will be in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in fall 2017 and who are interested in the health care field, they can get exposure to health care careers when they join us at RIT/NTID's Health Care Careers Exploration Camp. The camp will be July 22 - 27 at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf campus in Rochester, New York. During the camp, your students will:
- Discover which health care careers fit their interests
- Attend medical demonstrations and field trips
- Be part of hands-on demonstrations in biology, physical therapy, medical laboratory sciences, nursing, nutrition and more
- Become CPR/first aid certified
- Make new friends and have fun!
Interested students can apply at http://www.ntid.rit.edu/camps/healthcareers/apply. Also, students can register into our system to hold their spot if they are interested. The program fee is $700 for the room, board, and activities. Because we have received grant funding from Congress for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program, we are offering to accept 2-3 deaf and hard-of-hearing students who live in the Southeast regional and interested in the STEM field for FREE. That means we will pay for their fare, accommodations, and meals during the camp. The deaf and hard-of-hearing students must be entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade in fall 2017 and in excellent academic standing. If you or your students or their parents have any questions, call 585-286-4602 (videophone) or email aajnsl@rit.edu. I also attached the HCCEC flyer to the email to share with students and parents. Thank you and I look forward to working with you! Astrid A. Jones Assistant Director for Outreach & Special Projects

Sites and Apps!
Comic Life 3 - When I was teaching (many many years ago), I discovered Comic Life. At that time, it was a Mac-only program that allowed students to create comic strips on any topic. Now, Comic Life 3 works on Mac, Windows, and iPad, and is a great way to integrate comics into the curriculum. Download this flyer to see examples of ways that it has been used in the classroom. There is also an iPad app called Comic Touch from the same company. It is FREE and allows the user to add comic touches to photos. Plasq, the creators of Comic Life, have now released Comic Draw for the iPad Pro and Pen. This would be great for any students you have that are very artistic. They can use the pen to create their own drawings. I haven't tried this app, but it sounds great! Check out the Plasq website to get more information about these apps, see samples of ways they can be used in the classroom and tutorials, and get education pricing.
