The Described and Captioned Media Program is pleased to have collaborated with pepnet2 in developing its new online training module, Post-Production / Offline Captioning. This module provides an overview of the captioning process. Itexplains the value of captions, who can benefit from them, and why quality captions are essential for access. It also explores the legal issues surrounding captions.

Captioning comes in two formats: real-time and offline. Real-time captioning is when a service provider listens to an event and immediately types what is heard. Offline or post-production captioning refers to captions for a pre-recorded video. These captions are created and edited after the video is complete. The goal of the Post-Production / Offline Captioning Module is to help institutions and individuals learn about the captioning process. The module is available 24/7, takes approximately two hours to complete, and is free of charge. It is designed for those who know little about captioning and is meant to be a general overview for faculty and administrators. Those who work with deaf or hard-of-hearing consumers can learn more about how to explain the importance of captioning in their institutions.
