Webcast: Educational Planning for Students with Cochlear Implants

Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center presents a webcast on 9/21 at 1:00pm titled: Educational Planning for Students with Cochlear Implants

Geared towards professionals who work with students who use cochlear implants, this webcast discusses the knowledge and tools needed to meet the unique needs of those students. Dr. Susan Schatz and Dr. Mary Ann Kinsella-Meier, from the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, focus on factors shown in the evidence as critical to the language, academic, and social-emotional development of students using cochlear implants. They also discuss considerations in educational planning for students in either general education settings or schools for the deaf. Accompanying this webcast is a comprehensive reference list that supports the information shared.

Raising the Whole Child: Social Emotional Development in Deaf Children

This is the most recent research brief published by VL2. This VL2 research brief, by Drs. Linda Lytle and Gina Oliva, reviews the research on social-emotional development in children from birth to 12th grade, particularly focusing on deaf and hard of hearing children. The brief includes recommendations for parents and educators on how to support the deaf child's social and emotional development in order to lay the foundations for future social, academic, and life success.

RMTC gives this research brief a thumbs up. Parents don't often realize that their deaf child's social-emotional development is linked to their language development. This brief explains how these concepts are connected and how the family plays a critical role in the development of both.
Sites and Apps!

Virtuoso is actually a piano app. It is a fun way to teach how the cochlea is like the keys of a keyboard. It also helps when teaching the audiogram, and explaining high and low frequency sounds.
