There are very few tools available to Speech-Language Pathologists and Teachers of the Deaf to be able to assess the American Sign Language Skills of Deaf students. This workshop will provide an overview of The Visual Communication and Signed Language Checklist (VCSL). The VCSL documents developmental milestones of children who are acquiring sign language regardless of level of hearing and is designed for children birth to 5. If developmental delays are indicated by the VCSL, the identified learning gaps can be used to plan intervention programs and learning goals can be set. Research will be discussed that highlights the need for language assessment and intervention to improve literacy and academic outcomes for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Gallaudet University Regional Centers Update

The Gallaudet University Regional Center-Southeast ceased to exist on September 30, 2015. All entities currently within the region will become part of other regions effective October 1, 2015. Specifically:

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands will join Louisiana and Texas in the South Region, which is based at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. Ms. JoAnn R. Benfield is Interim Director.

As you know, the Gallaudet University Regional Centers share the resources and expertise of Gallaudet's undergraduate and graduate programs and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center through training programs, workshops and conferences, youth programs, technical assistance, and consultation. Regional centers are located at host colleges, which are valued partners and allies. Administratively, the Regional Centers are part of Gallaudet's Office of National Outreach, which supports the university's strategic plan and enrollment efforts through the Regional Centers, its Youth Programs, and Deaf WorldTeach in the Pacific.

This summer, Gallaudet University reviewed its Regional Center structure in light of the University's mission and strategic goals. As a result, the geographical boundaries of the regions have been changed to meet current programming and service needs.
