Spreadsheet for iPad/ Tablet Apps

Hello state of Florida! RMTC/OSBD is currently in the process of updating our spreadsheet for iPad/tablet apps for the classroom. If you are not familiar with our spreadsheet, it typically provides information regarding the price, application to your student population, and a brief description of the app itself. As many of you are aware, there are not a great deal of apps that are specifically designed for our D/HH or VI student populations. So, many of the apps that many of you are using might on the surface appear to have little to no application to our students. What we would love is for you to share with us some of your favorite apps! Tell us the name of the apps that you are using and how you are able to use it with your D/HH or VI students. Explain how you have been able to use certain features in the app that provide your students access to content that they may have previously been unable to access. We would love to hear back from you and see what kinds of apps you are using. If you would like to share that with us, please contact me at newtonb@fsdb.k12.fl.us. I hope all of you are off to a great school year and hope to see you soon!

Take care,

Brian

Deafness 101 for General Education Staff

Please distribute to school administrators and staff working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing:

This workshop is designed for general education teachers, administrators, and support staff who do not have significant experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The workshop provides information on how to support these students in the classroom and how to adapt your presentation, pacing and classroom to make sure the student has the opportunity for academic success. The session also provides plenty of time for questions and discussions with participants, as well as facts and information that will help you better understand the student and the deaf world in which the student lives.

Tools Teachers Can Use

Came across a Padlet with links to some neat tools you can use in your classroom. The doorway protractor below is one example. Wouldn't this help your students grasp the idea of degrees?

Sites and Apps!

Online Keyboarding Apps silver-keyboard.jpg
  • Typing.com - FREE! Has a K-12/College Curriculum, and will grade and track student progress.

  • Keyboarding Online
    - Individualized and Self-Paced; Students can access from anywhere. Must contact to get an estimate for cost.

  • Dance Mat Typing - Looks like more activities than tutorials. It's also from the UK. Would be fine for most typing, but I wonder if some of their spelling might be an issue (like colour vs color)).

  • Keyboarding Games - (not a class, but has games for practice)
