FLASHA Annual Convention

Thursday at 2:30: Session 401: Why Can't Deaf Children Read? What Do We Do? (LSLS Track) When we hear that most Deaf students graduate high school on a 3rd or 4th grade reading level, we should be in shock. But for some reason we continue to teach our Deaf students in the same way and we are not improving outcomes for this population. This presentation will take an in-depth look at why Deaf students are not making better gains, as well as what steps we can take to make a positive change.

Friday at 5:00: Session 215: NEW Mandated Document for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students: Communication Plan Florida Legislation added subsection (6) to Section 1003.55, Florida Statutes which required the Department of Education to develop a Communication Plan which shall be used during the development of an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for a student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This plan was adopted into rule and is a mandated document to be included with IEPs for all students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) or Dual Sensory Impaired (DSI) as of March 25th, 2014. This session will outline the details of the legislation, the reason behind it, and the requirements associated with it.
