Greetings!

Welcome back everyone!  The new school year has started.  We are all back and already on the road into the districts.  Please give us a call if we can be of help.

We thought would open up this year with a poem written by a student from Alachua County who graduated this past year - he wrote this when he was 16.

Enjoy.

Teachers

Praise be to teachers

For it is through their brilliance

That a beacon of hope guides us across

The vast sea of ignorance

So that we may one day

Tread upon the shores of enlightenment

And it is in the flames of compassion that blaze brightly in their hearts

That the keys to our destinies are forged

Blessed are we to have teachers who allow us to drink

The elixir of knowledge that flows forth from their

Endless wellspring of wisdom and prosperity

So that we may quench our thirst for knowledge

And grow strong so that we may

Shatter the chains of absurdity

Therefore, respect your teachers

And receive their knowledge

With grace and serenity

Welcome Back from Diana!

2014-15 is going to be another busy school year for OSBD.  Recently, the staff at OSBD (Mark and myself) were asked to assist Rena Carney from FDLRS Miccosukee to help teacher portions for the PD Module: Technology for Students Success: Assistive Technology. We will be in Gadsden County on September 16, 2014.

I will be presenting with Sharon Day from Monroe County at ATIA in January. Brian Newton who works for both OSBD and RMTC is also going to present

This year there are some new Teachers of the Visually Impaired in our small and rural districts.  I am looking forward to working with you. I am sure I will get the opportunities to meet you at our annual VI/DHH contact meeting that is being held in Tallahassee September 3-4.

Looking forward to seeing everyone either at the meeting or out in your districts!

Working With the Experts: Deaf/Hard of Hearing - Information, Tools, and Resources for Florida's Model Communication Plan

The Resource Materials and Technology Center (RMTC) in collaboration with Outreach Services for the Blind/Visually Impaired and Deaf/Hard of Hearing (OSBD) will be hosting a 4-day workshop to provide resources, training, and tools related to the implementation of the Model Communication Plan (MCP) on September 18, 19, 20, and 21, 2014 at the Double Tree Hilton Orlando Downtown.

This workshop will provide participants with the choice of three (3) tracks; Track 1 for those who work with students who use American Sign Language (ASL), Track 2 for those who work with children who are Auditory-Oral, and Track 3 for Administrators and/or other Specialty topics. In addition, we are also offering an opportunity to hear from Monica Verra-Tirado, Exceptional Student Education Bureau Chief as well as an opportunity to learn about a plethora of resources and support available to all districts.

Model Communication Plan Workshop for Parents

OSBD/RMTC now has a new MCP workshop.  It is titled "The Model Communication Plan: An Introduction for Parents".  The workshop provides an overview of what the Model Communication Plan is, why it is important, how it impacts the development of the IEP, and the parents' role in the MCP.

If you are interested in scheduling this workshop for parents, please contact Mark Keith at [email protected] or 904-827-2731

2014-2015 Directories of Services

We will be releasing our 2014-2015 editions of both of our Directories of Services soon.  We have postponed our normal September 1 release date this year because we are switching the directories to a new software package that will allow us to keep them more current and to improve our editing/updating capabilities. While this changeover has slowed down the release of this year's editions, it will make the directories far easier for us to edit and produce in the future.

We are expecting to release this year's editions sometime around the end of September or early October.  Once they are ready, we will send out an email via Constant Contact announcing the release.
