Greetings!
Hello from your Community Minister,
I feel so blessed to find myself in a job that I love working with a congregation that has unswervingly supported me and my ministry. As part of my ministry, I sometimes give worship services and workshops on mental health topics at other congregations. This coming Sunday, I will be at the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists leading worship in the morning and giving a workshop in the afternoon. If you want to know more about my ministry, you can do so at: www.mpuuc.org/mentalhealth/mentalintro.html
On next Monday, I will travel to Louisville, Kentucky for a week to spend time at the Unitarian Universalist Association's annual General Assembly meeting. For those of you who haven't been to a General Assembly, I'd like to suggest that you consider doing so at least once. It moves around from city to city and will be in Portland, Oregon in 2015. In addition to business meetings, there will be hundreds of meetings on all kinds of topics, with several thousand UUs in attendance. I will be one of the official chaplains for the event, something I haven't done before and I'm looking forward to acting in this role. I will also be looking forward to events with organizations I belong to, including the UU Addictions Ministry Team, the Society for Community Ministries, and EqUUal Access, the umbrella UU disability organization. EqUUal Access will be making an official announcement of the field test congregations for the new disability certification program, and effort that I have been leading for the denomination. I also look forward to the two days prior to the start of GA where UU ministers gather. If you want to follow some of these events, some of them will be streamed. You can find out more about this kind of virtual attendance at: www.uua.org/ga/virtual/index.shtml
Please let me know if you have any questions about my ministry or my involvement in General Assembly. These are things I love to talk about.

This Sunday's Service - June 16, 2013
|
| Pleasure and anticipation: Learning from stories: Spoiler Alert! Have you ever had to miss a favorite TV show and recorded it to watch later, only to have the ending ruined by someone who didn't know? Why is this true, yet we can re-watch the same movies again and again and still enjoy them? What do spoiler alerts have to teach us about the incredible power of stories?
Leading the service will be Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel and Worship Associate DeAnna Alm. Music will be provided by Jay Steele.

Mental Health Ministry
| | Mental Health Ministry: New Episode of Mental Health Matters: Music in Recovery
Music is perhaps one of the most underutilized tools in mental health recovery. Host Shannon Eliot chats with Michael Kessler, a veteran music therapist, and Paulette Franklin, a lifelong vocalist, about the roles of rhythm and melody in healing. Learn how music can be used in both therapeutic and non-therapeutic settings to ease symptoms of mental illness and promote emotional health. Hear remarkable accounts of the positive psychological and physiological effects that music can have on anyone's life. View this program at: http://www.mpuuc.org/mentalhealth/mentalTVMusic.html.

Curious about General Assembly?
|
| Curious about General Assembly? You can attend virtually!
General Assembly (GA), the annual meeting of Unitarian Universalists, is in Louisville, Kentucky this year from June 19-23. I will be attending in person, but you can participate at home, too. GA is transforming from an event one need be present to experience into a hybrid meeting-incorporating off-site delegate participation, live streaming of events, and social media to create an interactive experience for live and remote attendees. Some high-lights of what you can watch via live-streaming follow. These will also be available to watch on-line after the fact.
Opening Celebration and Plenary I, Event 1013
Wednesday, June 19, 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Friday, June 21, 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Service of the Living Tradition, Event 4044
Saturday, June 22, 8:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Sunday Morning Worship, Event 5004
Sunday, June 23, 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Closing Ceremony, Event 5008
Sunday, June 23, 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Notes: - Live-streaming video on a computer is best viewed with high-speed Internet. We recommend 1.5Mbps or greater download speed.
- Speakers or headphones are required for audio. Live-streaming video is not captioned. Captions and transcripts are added about two weeks after GA is over.

Mission Peak UU Garden News
Thanks to many hands, loving care and persistence our garden is looking good. We planted a variety of summer and winter squashes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, herbs and some corn. Strawberries have provided a sweet little taste for those who are willing to find them. Soon our blackberries will be ripe and we invite everyone to go pick as you please.
The turkey mom and her 3 babies have adopted our garden as well. If you visit the garden and see the cute family please gently but strongly encourage them to find a different playground. They will eventually be very destructive to our garden. We are looking for harvest volunteers as our produce ripens. This will take 10-20 min of your time prior to the Sunday service to harvest, place the produce in baskets and bring it to the garden share table. (includes your daily dose of Vitamin D)
Thanks for your ongoing support

| Mission Peak UU's Marriage Equality Party | | Mission Peak UU's Marriage Equality Party - Saturday Night June 29
Come party like it's 2008! The US Supreme Court's landmark rulings on California's Prop 8 and the federal "Defense of Marriage Act" (DOMA) are expected to be delivered the last week in June, and parties are being planned across the country. At Mission Peak, the Inclusiveness and Diversity Committee is hosting an exciting party on Saturday, June 29, at 7 pm, to mark this historic moment. Invite your friends and neighbors, come to Cole Hall, and plan to enjoy a night of live music, refreshments and fun! Childcare will be provided.
(In the sad event that the rulings are not good news, we'll skip the partying and will take part in a protest in Fremont instead -- and you'll want to be a part of that too. We'll keep you posted.) So mark your calendars now to band together with fellow Mission Peakers June 29 |
Gay Pride in San Francisco
| | Gay Pride in San Francisco - Are you Going?
San Francisco's world-reknown Pride Parade is on Sunday, June 30. Are you going this year? It's a thrilling, exciting celebration of humanity -- if you haven't taken part before, check it out! Mission Peak UU usually sends a contingent to march with other UUs to show our support for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The Inclusiveness and Diversity Committee is looking for a "point person" to coordinate our group this year. Could you do this? You simply need to help let Mission Peakers know where and when to meet -- whether you decide to carpool, BART, or gather in SF. Please let Beth Schaefer know if you can help organize. (This could be a great follow-up to our Cole Hall party the night before!) And it should be a special celebration this year after the Supreme Court rulings.

Around the World
| | Around the World with the Kids
Don't miss out on the fun! Contact Sally now to join our trip "Around the World" this summer.
We have the following nations scheduled for the Mission Peak children (ages 5-12) to discover: Brazil, India, Ghana, Scotland/Ireland, Morocco, Australian Aborigines, Greece, Intuit, Ohlone, and Yemen.
If there is a country or culture that you would like to share, call or email Sally now to set it up. Or sign up to assist in the classroom for one or more of those nations listed above.
The summer sessions are more relaxed than school-year classes, with all the elementary aged children in one class (average attendance last summer was 9 students). No experience is necessary. We always have three adults with the children so you'll have plenty of help.
Our kids are great fun to be with. If you are interested, please let me know. I'll be happy to answer all your questions.
