Greetings!
One of the joys this year for me has been the regular coffee shop hours I have been keeping around Fremont, Union City, Newark and Milpitas. I get to just hang out and see who stops by, and it is always a fun crowd. I figured it would give me more opportunities to be with all of you, but the unexpected surprise has been all the new relationships it has sparked between members and friends of Mission Peak UU. For the most part people check in with the same 8-10 people on Sunday, but you never know who will show up to my coffee shop hours, and this has allowed for all kinds of fun and interesting conversations and new friendships. And it just so happens that the next opportunity to join me and your fellow Mission Peakers is this Thursday, May 16. I will be at the new Suju's location ( 4949 Stevenson Blvd) from 11 AM - 1 PM.
I will also be trying my first commuter hours for the coffee shop concept in June, so if the lunch hour doesn't work well for you, circle Thursday, June 11 on your calendar. That evening I will be at Mission Coffee, just up the street from Mission Peak UU, from 4:30-6:30 PM.
You can also look below for some other times I have already scheduled, and check each week in that spot as I will continue to add more.
And finally, if you have a good idea for some place new for me to hold these hours, please let me know about it!
Thanks and I hope to see you soon!
Peace,
Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel
Minister of Mission Peak UU Congregation

This Sunday's Service - May 19, 2013
| | Dancing With Creation
The Biblical Trinity, Carl Jung and the man who invented the term "paradigm shift" have been incredibly helpful to how I understand the importance of creating.
Come hear how I have pieced together insights from these diverse sources to form my theology of creativity and what it means for you!
Leading the service will be Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel and Worship Associate Marylin Wakefield. Music will be provided by Peak Performers.

Once again our very own Beckett Gladney has taken a lovely set of pictures of one of our Sunday's together, and since this service included four children being welcomed into our community, the pictures are even cuter than normal! So just give a little click right here and hop on over and take a look! |
New Mission Statement
|
|
From the Mission Statement Refining Task Force
Refining this statement has been an honor. We thank each of you for your participation: in the workshop, through e-mail, at input meetings, and in general conversations. Each comment and question helped us craft this final statement so that it reflects what you desire, to the extent possible. We have been blessed with your thoughts and with your trust. We have reached a point of completion and handed our finished statement to the Process Task Force. Here is our proposed Mission Statement: The foundation of Mission Peak is love. We are a spiritual community of open minds, nurturing growth and healing in ourselves and all people. Together we strive to live compassionately and courageously as we work for a nonviolent, just and sustainable world. A number of the terms in the statement have been the source of some controversy. So we've chosen to publish a brief clarification of three of them, one today and the other two in subsequent issues. LOVE: We use this word with the understanding that love is unconditional, and is not an easy foundation on which to stand. It requires us to question our behaviors, thoughts, and judgments and to live in full awareness of our effect on the world. Love asks us to be patient, have hope, and stand up for others. Love is the total positive regard for all people.

Sandwich Squad this Sunday
We'll be making sandwiches this Sunday! Please join us in the Cole Hall kitchen after the service if you can (and if you can't join us, but still want to support the Sandwich Squad, stop by and drop a donation in the basket. Thanks!)
Come join us for a worthy cause and some good conversation. We normally meet the second Sunday of the month to make sandwiches for the the Tri-City Volunteers Lunch Program for the Homeless. Many thanks also to all the regular Sandwich Squad members who help keep this volunteer opportunity going strong!

IDC Movie Night
| | Movie June 1 on Astounding Rates of Imprisonment for Drug Offenses -- for Certain Groups
The US comprises 5% of the world's population, and holds 25% of the world's prisoners -- that rate is the world's highest, beating out even Russia, China and Iran. It's due to arrest patterns for drug offenses -- patterns that affect mainly African Americans and the poor. This grew from the failed "War on Drugs" and now "mandatory minimum sentencing" laws for even very minor drug charges, says the absorbing movie The House I Live In. This fascinating story raises controversial questions: Is this a race issue, or a class issue? Why? Now what? Please join the Inclusiveness and Diversity Committee to watch and discuss The House I Live In on Saturday, June 1, at 7pm in Cole Hall to learn more. See June's MPUUC newsletter for additional information. We'll also briefly kick off this year's "group read" of a book with a somewhat different take on this, The New Jim Crow (see below). |
| Group read - July 21 | | "Group Read" of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
The Inclusiveness and Diversity Committee invites you to join in reading this year's UUA-recommended book, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. We'll kick off our group read at our June 1 showing of a movie (see above notice) that interestingly reaches somewhat different conclusions than those in this book. So get yourself a copy of the book from the online UUA bookstore, other sites, or the library, and dig in. After the July 21 service on this topic, all those interested will join for a group discussion. Alexander will fascinate you and make you rethink a lot of things as she traces America's painful history of separating and denying civil rights to blacks -- from slavery, to Jim Crow laws, to what she carefully argues is today's "New Jim Crow" movement: the mass incarceration of African American men. As she writes, more African Americans are in prison today than were held as slaves in 1850. A lot to consider. |
| Book Exchange | | Book Exchange Cart
Have you visited the new Book Exchange Cart at Cole Hall? It's "home" is near the sign in table and it has books for all ages. There are picture books for the little ones. For older kids there are books such as "Shooting Kabul" -- a work by a local writer about escaping from Afghanistan -- and a Hollow Falls mystery. For adults there are a variety of fiction and nonfiction, -- mysteries, poems for creativity, how to deal with job stress.
You are welcome to borrow these books or take one/leave one. There is plenty of room on the double-sided cart for additions! Please bring in your variety of books to share with the congregation. Any kind of book for any age is welcome!

Mental Health Ministry
| | Mental Health Ministry - New TV Show on Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs
Will Hall is a nationally recognized mental health advocate, counselor, and speaker. He is also the author of the Harm Reduction Guide to Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs, a 52-page pamphlet containing valuable information on reducing and ultimately ending the use of psychiatric medication. Host Shannon Eliot catches up with him at the recent WRAP Around the World Conference in Oakland to chat about about mental health stigma, the controversy around psychiatric medication, suicidal feelings, and how society defines normality. | NAMIWalk 2013 | | NAMIWalk 2013
On the morning of Saturday, June 1st, the National Alliance on Mental Illness is hosting its annual fundraising walk in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. NAMI is very active in advocating for and assisting the mentally ill with support groups and informational classes for consumers and their families. Our team, called the Peak Survivors, will be walking a 5 kilometer route (a shorter route is also available) to show our solidarity with all sufferers of mental illness and their families. Those who cannot walk can still contribute by supporting a walker financially. To join our team or support a walker, go to the website http://namiwalks.nami.org/peaksurvivors. Contributions of cash or checks (made out to NamiWalk SFBay) can also be given to the walker directly (put the walker's name and the team name "Peak Survivors" on the memo line).
The arrival time for the walk is 9 am; the walk itself will start at 11 a.m. For carpooling info, contact Kathryn Lum at (408) 422-3831.
