whitepaperArchitects Release First-Ever White Paper on Materials Transparency and Risk

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently announced the release of its first-ever white paper on materials transparency and risk, part of an AIA effort to equip the entire profession with consensus-driven guidance on an issue of critical importance to the profession, its suppliers and clients.

"Whether in politics or in building design, transparency is an increasingly necessary element of modern life," said AIA CEO Robert Ivy, FAIA. "And when it comes to materials - the very substances of our built environment - it's more important than ever for architects to be able to communicate openly about what they contain."

The white paper is the product of more than a year of effort by the AIA's Materials Knowledge Working Group (MKWG), pursuant to a position statement approved by the AIA Board of Directors in December 2014. In that statement, the AIA recognized that "building materials impact the environment and human health before, during and after their use," and it encouraged architects "to promote transparency in materials' contents and in their environmental and human health impacts."

"Materials transparency & risk for architects: An introduction to advancing professional ethics while managing professional liability risks," was created by materials specialists but is aimed at all architects. It provides a backdrop on the necessity for materials transparency and the steps architects should be taking to ensure change, promote openness, and increase collaboration between themselves, their suppliers and their clients.

Additional Guidance
The AIA has published guidance on how to address materials transparency issues in its contract document B503-2007 Guide for Amendments to AIA Owner-Architect Agreements. http://www.aia.org/groups/aia/documents/document/aias076859.pdf

There is a growing amount of evidence linking the condition of our built environment to individual choices that promote health. Fitwel has a vision for a healthier future where every building is enhanced to support the well-being of its occupants, and support healthy communities.

The Center for Active Design is launching the
Fitwel rating and certification program for
healthy workplaces that is: evidence-based,
wide-ranging, and economical.

How are buildings rated?
Fitwel is a simple, web-based scorecard accessible through the Fitwel web portal. The scorecard consists of 60+ benchmark criteria that are organized by sections of a building, from the lobby to the cafeteria. A numeric score is displayed at the completion of the scorecard.

When can I use it?
Fitwel was piloted in 89 public buildings to test and refine the scorecard. Fitwel is currently being released to a restricted audience in advance of a full launch in 2017. Contact the Center for Active Design for details about pioneering Fitwel in 2016.

Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill, Washington, DC

The American Institute of Architects announced the opening of registration for its first-ever ""SpeakUp"" advocacy and action event, which will take place at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill on July 13-15 in Washington, D.C.

SpeakUp is open to any AIA members who believe they can make a difference in the world through engaging in the electoral and legislative process at the national state or local levels. SpeakUp's attendees will receive training from top political and policy experts on how to push legislation, develop policy messages and raise money in workshops and interactive role-playing exercises. Some attendees also will head to Capitol Hill to meet with their elected representatives and advocate for the AIA's policy agenda.

"AIA members believe that advocating for the profession is one of the Institute's highest priorities," said AIA President Russ Davidson, FAIA. "SpeakUp will give architects the tools they need to be more active and engaged in the political and governmental processes, helping ensure they have a seat at the table when big policy decisions are made."

Don't miss this chance to sharpen your skills and speak up for architects!

Emerging Professionals
ncarbNCARB - AXP Launces June 29, 2016

On June 29, 2016, the Intern Development Program (IDP) will be updated to reflect six broad areas of current architectural practice-and renamed the Architectural Experience Program (AXP). Here's what you need to know to prepare your licensure candidates for the upcoming changes.

What's Happening?
The program's current 17 experience areas will be realigned into six areas to ensure your mentees receive the training they need to practice independently. The six new experience areas are:
  • Practice Management
  • Project Management
  • Programming & Analysis
  • Project Planning & Design
  • Project Development & Documentation
  • Construction & Evaluation

A New Option: AXP e-Portfolio
The AXP will also feature a new e-Portfolio option. Through this alternative, eligible design professionals with comprehensive experience beyond five years will have an opportunity to satisfy the AXP's experience requirements through an online portfolio.

The e-Portfolio is a great opportunity for professionals who put licensure on hold due to career, personal, or economic reasons, and will be available to those who can document two years of experience that is older than five years. If you know any candidates who might be interested, help get them back on the path to licensure.

How Will This Impact Your Candidates?
If your mentees haven't completed the IDP by June 29, they'll be automatically transitioned into the new AXP. The program will still require 3,740 hours. Plus, all the required hours they've already reported will be allocated under one of the six new areas, so your candidates won't lose any hours.

The AXP will have two experience settings: Setting A: Practice of Architecture and Setting O: Other Experiences. A number of existing supplemental experience opportunities that currently fall under Setting S-including site visits, design competitions, and the Professional Conduct Monograph-will be incorporated into Setting O. However, a few opportunities will no longer be eligible after the update, so be sure to remind your candidates to report any supplemental experience before June 28. Learn more about the new experience settings.

What's Next?
We will continue to share updates with you as we get closer to the launch date, so be on the lookout for blog articles, social media updates, and more. In the meantime, take the opportunity to meet with your mentees and help them make a plan to complete their experience requirement in the new AXP.

EmpCompetitions

WoodWorks, an educational initiative that provides free technical support and resources related to the design and construction of non-residential and multi-family wood buildings, is now accepting nominations for its 2017 U.S. Wood Design Awards. The awards recognize excellence in wood design, engineering, and construction, as well as innovative projects that showcase attributes of wood such as strength, beauty, versatility, cost effectiveness, and sustainability. The deadline for nominations is September 30, 2016.

Projects may be submitted in the following eight categories:
  • Multi-Family Wood Design
  • Commercial Wood Design - Low-Rise
  • Commercial Wood Design - Multi-Story
  • Wood in Schools
  • Institutional Wood Design
  • Green Building with Wood
  • Beauty of Wood
  • Wood in Government Buildings
Projects across these categories will also be selected to receive regional awards of excellence. For program rules, category descriptions, and nomination information, please click here.

"We're seeing real momentum toward the use of wood in buildings," said Jennifer Cover, PE, Executive Director of WoodWorks. "Reasons range from cost and schedule savings, to wood's design flexibility, renewability and reduced carbon footprint, even studies linking the use of exposed wood to occupant wellbeing. It's resulting in some exciting work from architects and engineers who are pushing the boundaries of wood design, or choosing to use wood where they may previously have defaulted to another material simply out of habit. The Wood Design Awards are an opportunity for WoodWorks to celebrate these individuals and the ingenuity they're demonstrating with their wood building designs."

Special consideration will be given to recently completed buildings, projects that utilize wood as a dominant structural element, and designs that exemplify new opportunities for wood construction.

Deadline and Eligibility
Award submissions must be received by midnight PT on September 30, 2016. There are no nomination fees and multiple submissions are encouraged. To be eligible, projects and nominated firms must be located in the U.S. and projects must be fully constructed by September 30, 2016. Wood Design Awards apply to newly constructed buildings only. Additions, renovations, and structures other than buildings are not eligible. Complete details and nomination materials are available
here.
