Construction spending greatly exceeded expectations in the nonresidential market in 2015, and this year should see healthy growth levels as well. There continues to be significant demand for hotels, office space, manufacturing facilities and amusement and recreation spaces.
The AIA' semi-annual Consensus Construction Forecast, a survey of the nation's leading construction forecasters, is projecting that spending will increase just more than eight percent in 2016, with next year's projection being an additional 6.7% gain. Continue reading...
Additionally, AIA queried their Architecture Billings Index (ABI) panelists for the design trends that they think will be the most prevalent over the next decade: increased energy efficiency, innovative building materials (lots of publically traded companies likely to see a spike in demand) and use of design software enhancements that will help eliminate a lot of waste, cost overruns and project delays will grow substantially. You can see the future construction trend survey results here.

The Architects Foundation, along with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), in December, issued its first progress report of the AIA's Design and Health Research Consortium. The consortium helps translate research on design's influence on public health into architectural practice for policymakers, design and public health professionals and the general public. "Academia is always where basic research into any field grabs a foot-hold before inevitably thrusting itself into the commercial marketplace," said Sherry-Lea Bloodworth Botop, Executive Director of the Architects Foundation. "Such is the case with the architecture profession's influence on public health."

 Understanding Window U-Factor
By Tom Herron, LEED Green Associate
Windows account for 40 percent of a building's energy loss, and with energy costs and public demand for efficient buildings on the rise, using proven tactics to lessen this loss has become more important than ever. Finding the best materials to contribute to a building's performance targets is essential, but knowing which products will actually shrink the envelope's energy footprint can be daunting. When it comes to windows, U-factor is a key figure to consider and comes standard on all National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) labels. Continue reading...

Lighting is on the cusp of change so profound that nothing - not even the most vivid sci-fi imagination - has come close to depicting it. So say three lighting experts who, together, represent one of the world's foremost lighting-research institutes, one of the world's largest landlords, and one of the world's largest lighting manufacturers. The three addressed the subject of circadian rhythms at the annual lighting colloquy sponsored by the National Lighting Bureau. Their discussion, moderated by EdisonReport Publisher Randy Reid, is now available for viewing on the National Lighting Bureau website.
"Imagine people wearing control devices on their wrists that would automatically adjust the color and intensity of 'connected light' to meet their physical, emotional, and even spiritual needs at any given moment. Continue reading...
