cultureAIA Culture Collective Final Report Available

In 2014, 240 members volunteered to be part of the AIA Repositioning effort as the Change Network. Thirty-five of those volunteers joined the Culture Collective, which lead the Change Network. The newly released Culture Collective final report identifies opportunities for us to have the most impact.

In the words of Culture Collective facilitator, Stuart Coppedge, AIA: In every effective movement toward significant positive change, one individual or group must step forward and work to make the change real. 2014 President Helene Combs Dreiling charged the Culture Collective to be such a force; we trust our efforts will be a catalyst for the AIA.

AIAenergystmtArchitects Issue Statement on DOE's Net-Zero Energy Building Definition

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) issued the following statement on the Department of Energy's release of a common definition of a zero energy building, or what is also referred to as a "net zero energy" or "zero net energy" building.

"We applaud the Department of Energy's continuing work to promote buildings that use less energy. For more than 150 years, AIA-member architects have worked to advance our quality of life through design. From designing the next generation of energy-saving buildings to making our communities healthier and more vibrant, the 86,000 members of the AIA shape our future through their work. The quality of this future is wholly dependent on sustainable, resilient buildings that reduce the nation's reliance on non-renewable energy sources. That is why the Department of Energy's work is vitally important to the industry and nation as a whole." AIA President Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA

DEmceDE Architect License - Annual Continuing Education Requirement
Do you have 12 HSW CE credits yet this calendar year?

In Delaware, the Board of Architects Regulations mandate that all architecture licensees must complete a minimum of 12 Continuing Education Hours each calendar year (Jan. 1 through Dec. 31) or be exempt from these continuing education requirements.

  • HSW CE creditsAll of those 12 CE Hours must be completed in Health, Safety, and Welfare Subjects acquired in Structured Educational Activities through either (a) NCARB monograph programs and/or (b) Health, Safety and Welfare Programs approved by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

  • License Renewal:
Failure to comply with these requirements may result in non-renewal of the architect's registration. Falsely attesting to having acquired the required continuing education could lead to the assessment of a financial penalty, letter of reprimand, license suspension or renovation.

  • Hardship Extension:
Requests for a hardship extension must be in writing and submitted to the Board prior to the expiration of your current license. The Board may, in its discretion, grant an extension of time within which to complete the CE requirement.

Millennials won't take no
for an answer, says recent research on client trends.
By Ben Ikenson for AIA Architect / Illustration: Brett Ryder

Long before the housing market crashed in 2008, the architecture and design industry was facing trouble, says Ann Voda, AIA, a principal at Bentz/Thompson/Rietow in Minneapolis and president of AIA Minnesota. The "so-called traditional practice of architecture was enduring pressure and revealing stress cracks well before 2008," she wrote in the forward to a 2012 AIA Minnesota report commissioned to help architects navigate the unsure post-crash market.

"Even during the expansive times leading up to the crash, the architect's role in a project was perceived as eroded," she continues in the Architects in Commerce Research Initiative report, "[and] there were concerns that we were undervalued, overworked, and underpaid. The writing was on the wall for medium sized architectural firms with a general design practice who didn't develop a specialty."

One of the things that made this report meaningful is that it reflected the input of clients-owners and developers, contractors, and owner representatives-along a spectrum of trends, from the perceived role of architects to third-party advocates for property owners.

Jean Dufresne, AIA, co-principal at Chicago-based Space Architects+Planners and a member of the AIA's Small Firm Round Table, adds that the increased reliance of clients on representatives, and of architects on contractors, sets a difficult precedent to reverse.

"We have left others to erode our skills and services," says Dufresne. "When is the last time you saw an architect on HGTV or TLC? One that clearly showed value and return on investment on the project? Never! And that is horrible."

But Michele Russo, senior director of research for the AIA, sees potential in findings of the Architects in Commerce Research Initiative report. "The emergence of third-party representatives is an important trend to understand, and one that has led to some frustration for design professionals, who feel they are becoming distanced from their clients," she says. "However, the research that AIA Minnesota conducted suggests that clients want architects to be their partners, understanding their needs and offering solutions, versus just acting as a service provider or trying to impose their own vision. dbfDavis, Bowen & Friedel's Taylor Named 2015 Young Professional of the Year

Mr. Benjamin Taylor, E.I.T., of Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF), has recently been recognized as the "2015 Young Professional of the Year" by the Talbot County Chamber of Commerce. Taylor's
Benjamin Taylor, E.I.T. (right)
receives "2015 Young Professional of the Year"
final selection for the award was made by the Chamber Board following his peer nomination. Currently serving as the immediate past chairman of the Talbot County Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals (TCCCYP) Board, he has been a member of the Board since 2008.

As a member of the Talbot Chamber, Taylor has strengthened his community and professional connections by participating in the TCCCYP, a business development and social/philanthropic group for professionals under the age of forty. With regard to his Young Professionals efforts, Taylor stated, "I have similar opportunities with my job - I seek out or create projects to satisfy a clear and valuable purpose, then I do the planning and legwork required to implement it. Sometimes it's creating a technical design or maybe it's continuing the work initiated by others, but, nevertheless, there's always an opportunity to do something meaningful, and I'm always up for the challenge."

Joining DBF in 2002 as a survey and engineering intern while attending college, Taylor is now an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) and has advanced to his current position of Project Manager. He will achieve his Professional Engineering (P.E.) status upon successfully completing the board certification exam which he will be taking in October of this year. Taylor's contributions to the firm include municipal planning, site and infrastructure design, stormwater management, and construction management, as well as permit acquisition and cost estimating.

"We at DBF applaud Ben's support of the TCCCYP in setting an example to our youth and for helping to make Talbot County a solid place to do business," shared DBF's co-founder, Jerry Friedel, P.E.

dbf2DBF Ranked Among 2015 Top 75 Mid-Atlantic Design Firms

Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF), has been ranked #57 on the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Top 75 Design Firms in the Mid-Atlantic region. The rankings were based upon revenue earned in the states of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C. during 2014. DBF was the highest ranking Delmarva-based firm on the list.
Engineering News-Record ENR
Top 75 Mid-Atlantic Design Firms

This annual list of firms was compiled by ENR, an established publication in the engineering, architecture, and construction industry with over 60,000 subscribers. For over a century, ENR and its sister magazine, Architectural Record, along with the databases of F.W. Dodge & Sweets were a segment of the McGraw Hill Construction business unit. This unit became Dodge Data & Analytics in 2014.

DBF has been providing professional engineering, architectural,  and surveying services to individuals, businesses, municipalities, and governmental clients in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia since 1983. A few projects from the past year contributing to the firm's "Top 75 Mid-Atlantic Design Firms" ranking include the Wallops Research Park in Virginia, Milford's CHEER Center, beach replenishment at Willoughby Beach, improvements to the athletic complex at Salisbury University, grant assistance to the Town of Henderson, MD, street improvements in St. Michaels, MD and Delmar, DE/MD, and the new regional service center for Choptank Electric in Salisbury, MD - now under construction.

"When you consider the economic contributions by the construction industry generated in the Mid-Atlantic Region, most notably Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia, it's nice to see the Delmarva Peninsula provides its share as well. And, as  a firm based on the Peninsula, we couldn't be more proud to be serving our communities and clients here and to be doing so at a level noteworthy to Engineering News-Record," stated DBF principal Michael R. Wigley, AIA.
