New App Aims to Coach Architectural Careers Learn, contribute, and earn with AIAKinetic-
a smartphone-based guide for practicing architects By AIA Staff
You've taken a mentor out for coffee. You've trolled LinkedIn for handy tips. Or you've bought a used Jack Welch book on a lark one day. Maybe you're part of a Meetup group. You might even have hired a career coach.
The point is: Finding reliable signposts on your road as a professional takes some effort.
The AIA's Small Firm Round Table (SFRT) hopes to make it a little easier with the launch of AIAKinetic-a smartphone-based career guide for architects coverin g what it takes to be successful in practice. AIAKinetic is a career guide for emerging professionals, a primer for young architects, and a resource for mid-career professionals-easily accessible on multiple platforms. Developed in conjunction with the app's content editor Rena M. Klein, FAIA (editor of The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, 15th Edition) and the AIA's Young Architects Forum, AIAKinetic compiles original 250-word entries on topics that run the gamut of practice.
"It's an empowering tool," says Brian J. Fricke, AIA, a principal at Kerns Group Architects in Falls Church, VA., and SFRT chair. "You're going to learn about best business practices; you're going be able to contribute by rating and commenting on the articles, and with AIAKinetic you can earn points that you can cash in for purchases from the AIA."

Why Your High-Efficiency-Lighting May Not Be Very Efficient At All
Imagine, if you will, the world's most efficient lighting system; a system so efficient that it provides all the lighting needed by a 100-person workforce for the fantastically small annual sum of just $100; that's just $1 per person per year! Can a lighting system be any more efficient than that?
Yes, it can, says National Lighting Bureau Chair James M. "Jim" Yorgey, P.E., LC, CTS: "While having a highly efficient lighting system is important, it's even more important - from a bottom-line point of view - that the lighting system contribute to the enhanced efficiency of other systems lighting affects, human systems in particular."
Mr. Yorgey - whose "day job" is being Lutron Electronics Company's technical applications manager - focused on worker productivity, pointing out that "light is for people. The better people can see, the faster and more effectively they can perform whatever visual tasks they happen to be working on." As it so happens, almost all tasks performed in commercial, industrial, institutional, and other buildings are visual tasks. "Huge bottom-line benefits are attainable by providing an illuminated environment designed to accommodate the needs of the tasks involved, the space where they're being performed, and the people who are performing them," Mr. Yorgey said.
Consider as a hypothetical example a 100-employee operation that spends $5,000 each year on the energy needed for lighting. The operation's manager decides to invest in high-efficiency lighting and she's delighted with the result: The new system cuts lighting-energy consumption by 50% and the utility bill plummets by $2,500 per year. That's efficient...or is it? Read more...

CDC Releases New Built Environment Assessment Tool
Chris Kochtitzky, MSP
Associate Director for Program Development
CDC's Div. of Emergency & Environ. Health Services
A wide array of tools exists for measuring different features of the built environment, many of them well validated. These existing tools fall into three categories: 1) interview or self-administered questionnaires which primarily measure perceptions, 2) tools that collect archival (existing) data, often using GIS, and 3) systematic observation or audit tools. It is often difficult for local program staff and evaluators to know which features of the built environment are most important to measure on the basis of the health behaviors and outcomes they are trying to affect. It is also difficult to know which tool(s) to choose to most accurately and feasibly assess those features.
The Built Environment Assessment Tool (BE Tool) (an adaptation of MAPS) was designed to alleviate some of the challenges posed by the significant number of narrowly focused tools aimed at only one activity (walking), one subpopulation (older adults), or one public health area (inactivity). It was created as a collaborative enterprise across multiple areas of public health - health promotion, injury prevention, environmental health, etc. It is a direct systematic observation data collection instrument for measuring the core features and quality of the built environment related to behaviors that affect health, especially behaviors such as walking, biking, and other types of physical activity. There are many aspects of the built environment. The built environment includes the buildings, roads, sidewalks, utilities, homes, transit, fixtures, parks and all other man-made entities that form the physical characteristics of a community. The built environment can impact human health by affecting rates of physical activity, air pollutants such as ozone and particulate matter that can exacerbate asthma and respiratory disease, and emissions of carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change.
