VideoVideo:  Look up

The AIA's television commercial aired on numerous networks throughout the first few months of 2015. We now present the full-length version to you again with the reminder to look up, whether you're in Atlanta for Convention or embarking on a project in your hometown. Watch now.

moodyMoody, Ehrlich, Ripple, and Darnstadt on Building a Smart, Enduring Firm
By Steve Cimino

Four prominent architects who founded their own firms came together for a keynote panel on the final day of AIA Convention 2015 to have a conversation about the business of architecture.

The panel-featuring Katherine Darnstadt, AIA; Steven Ehrlich, FAIA; Curtis J. Moody, FAIA; and Mark Ripple, AIA-was moderated by Trish Regan, an Emmy-nominated investigative journalist and Fox Business Network anchor. The free-flowing exchange of hard-earned observations touched on several themes, including how each firm has developed over time and how to find a balance between design culture and finances.

CSI and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have announced CSI's endorsement of the AIA's Design-Build documents. This endorsement follows a thorough review of the 2014 documents by CSI liaisons to the AIA Contract Documents Committee and by the CSI Technical Committee, both of which analyzed the documents for good industry practice, consistency, and alignment with CSI core technical values.

"Design-Build represents a method of project delivery that integrates the relationship between designers and contractors for enhanced collaboration and teamwork," said Robert W Simmons FCSI, CCPR, CSC,President of CSI. Given the diversity of CSI's membership, AIA's Design-Build agreements present a highly desirable means of establishing project teams to meet owner performance requirements."

The endorsement by CSI includes the following AIA Contract Documents:

  • AIA Document A141™-2014, Standard Form of Agreement Between Owner and Design-Builder
  • AIA Document A142™-2014, Standard Form of Agreement Between Design-Builder and Contractor
  • AIA Document A441™-2014, Standard Form of Agreement Between Contractor and Subcontractor
  • AIA Document B143™-2014, Standard Form of Agreement Between Design-Builder and Architect
  • AIA Document C141™-2014, Standard Form of Agreement Between Owner and Consultant for a Design-Build Project
  • AIA Document C441™-2014, Standard Form of Agreement Between Architect and Consultant for a Design-Build Project

"This endorsement is a testament to the quality and importance of our Design-Build documents and reinforces AIA's leadership position in the industry with respect to this growing delivery method," said Deborah DeBernard, AIA, NCARB, Architect AIBC, LEED BD&C, Senior Vice President, AIA Contract Documents. "We are honored to have the endorsement of this esteemed organization."

The 2014 Design-Build documents are available for purchase in the latest version of the AIA Contract Documents desktop software, and online through AIA Documents-on-Demand, and AIA Documents-on-Demand Plus.

gbaGBA Publishes New Guide on Getting Paid

In an ideal world, design and environmental professionals' bills would all be paid within 30 days. Recognizing that we do not live in an ideal world, the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA) has developed a brief but comprehensive guide to getting paid. Titled Getting Paid, the new guide focuses on specific techniques to achieve prompt payment while avoiding some clients' efforts to avoid payment altogether, typically by filing a negligence claim.

According to GBA President Gordon M. Matheson, Ph.D., P.E., P.G. (Schnabel Engineering, Inc.),"For many years efforts to collect a bill have been a principal trigger to negligence claims. For that reason, GBA has counseled consistently that it is better to write off a fee than it is to contest it with an unscrupulous client. A key preventive, discussed in the guide, is performing a thorough background check before accepting a new client, to help ensure the organization involved pays on time and doesn't resort to a claim as a discount mechanism. It's also why design and environmental professionals' contracts should include a dispute-resolution mechanism that makes litigation a last resort or not an alternative at all."

EMERGING PROFESSIONALS
YAFWomen in Architecture and Young Architects Forums

Last year my colleague and I distributed a national survey that aimed to uncover gaps in knowledge and practice around sustainable design techniques pertaining to the built environment.

We both work for architecture firms that are committed to the 2030 Challenge, but we have found that not every project we complete adheres to the current goals of the 2030 Challenge. Wondering why, we developed a survey to test the knowledge level of current practitioners around basic passive design strategies, to determine if potentially this had an impact on why our work and other's work was not meeting the goals of the 2030 Challenge.

The results were fascinating; and we have decided to conduct this survey for a second time, to hone in on some of the more interesting components discovered during the last survey, especially around GENDER and AGE. We would like to ask you to help us to take this SURVEY, and pass on the link to your colleagues. The more responses collected, the better the data!

The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete, and will contribute to our understanding of what it will take to reach carbon-neutrality. The results will be presented at various national conferences this year. If you are interested in learning more about the study, please reach out to Sophia or I directly.

Thank you.
