Catholic Schools Week
Dear BSCS Parents,

As we move closer to Christmas break, we have begun many festivities that lead us to Christmas.  As a result, the kids are showing their excitement!  Each morning, the children are participating in the Advent wreath lighting ceremony; last week the PTSA room parents continued the St. Nicholas tradition of filling the students' shoes with candy; today we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception Mass (the preschoolers joined us at mass!); this Friday is the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration (in the church at 2:00PM)!  Next Thursday, we come together as a school community for the Christmas program and next Friday at 9:00AM in the church, we reenact Las Posadas.  Our children will cherish the faith-filled memories that they are experiencing during theses weeks of Advent!

Besides all of the wonderful holiday events our children are experiencing, I would like to showcase the Middle School students as they begin work on the 2015-2016 yearbook.  The middle schoolers were our official photographers at the fall trimester awards assembly.  Since then, Miss Hooper, with the assistance of Ms. Bonczek, have been teaching students about the yearbook; how to write, format, and edit their assigned pages.  The yearbook class aligns with language arts standards, technology standards, media literacy standards, and business education standards.  Moreover, I am quite proud of the students and I am happy to provide this leadership and academic opportunity for them.

During the yearbook introduction this week, the 8th graders were engaged and offered plenty of ideas.  When asked questions, they contributed a lot of great answers and ideas - especially for how to promote the yearbook (somehow getting hooked on giving away a water bottle to anyone who bought a hard cover book)!  They discussed if this was a good marketing idea when they looked at how give-away items impact the bottom line to break even.  Realizing that we are the middleman, they began to see the lack of profitability for this year, convinced however that it could work next year.

The 7th Grade asked really great questions. They were curious about writing copy, taking pictures (especially taking pictures), and working on the computer program.

While more subdued, the 6th Grade was eager to begin and take responsibility of tackling their pages.

Students in each grade level will work on 3-4 pages of the yearbook with a partner; the students will be helping with (and learning about and sharing with their class): marketing, distribution, timelines, advertising and sponsorships, the annual cover contest, the inside theme or layout, asking for and obtaining information from staff members (many of these activities require students to work with other teachers, admin, and the entire student body).  We are so excited about the forthcoming yearbook and encourage everyone to purchase a book whenthe opportunity is presented to you.

I hope you have a blessed week,
Carla

Feast Day of St. Lucy
Saint Lucy, you did not hide your light under a basket, but let it shine for the whole world, for all the centuries to see.  We may not suffer torture in our lives the way you did, but we are still called to let the light of our Christianity illumine our daily lives.  Please help us to have the courage to bring our Christianity into our work, our recreation, our relationships, our Christianity conversation - every corner of our day.  Amen.
