Dear Parents,

I hope you and yours had a wonderful Thanksgiving! The Capstick family certainly did! There is nothing better than a holiday with my family!

As you know, one of the unique aspects about our school community is just that: the strong sense of community. I am in awe of several areas of what a wonderful community we have at Blessed Sacrament. Before Thanksgiving, I spoke to a parent that shared that her friend was dissatisfied with the school her child goes to because there is not a sense of community with the parents and that the experience thus far feels impersonal. We both agreed that we feel blessed that our school community is highly engaged and supportive of one another!

Within a few days of this conversation, an email from one of our parents went out to several families asking if anyone would be willing to help out a family in need. This family has encountered an unfortunate turn in their lives. Within a very short period of time, parents responded with an abundance of support. This is such a spectacular example of the support and charity given by our parents. What a beautiful expression!

On Monday, I had the pleasure of experiencing community with the expression of our faith in attending the 4th and 5th Grade Advent prayer and then the Middle School Advent prayer. The 4th and 5th graders and their teachers gathered around the Advent wreath in the Gym Building lobby. Mrs. Urban led the students with a scripture reading and an explanation of Advent. The children and their teachers read a prayer together. Similarly, the Middle School students gathered around the Advent wreath in the Middle School hall to pray and light the Advent candle.

According to McMillan and Chavis (1986), "Sense of community is a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members' needs will be met through their commitment to be together." Although we may fit this definition, we are unique in that we fit the definition. Not all communities can say they work in concert with one another and for the good of their respective milieu.
We are an unparalleled expression of community; for that we are grateful!

O Christ, our Lord, who did beautify the most blessed Andrew with the grace of apostleship, and the crown of martyrdom, by granting to him this special gift, that by preaching the mystery of the cross, he should merit death on the cross; grant us to become most true lovers of Your holy cross, and denying our selves, to take up our cross and follow You; that by sharing your suffering in this life, we may deserve the happiness of obtaining life everlasting.
