Dear Parents,

Well, we dodged a potential hazardous blizzard today! Chances are given that this is an El Nio year we will be watching the forecasts closely.  Hopefully the multiple ways we communicated that we would be on a one-hour delay was effective.

Today, Tuesday, November 17, 2015, Mr. Kevin Kijewski, J.D., M.A. Ed., the Superintendent of Catholic Schools visited Blessed Sacrament Catholic School.  As the new Superintendent, Mr. Kijewski is visiting all of the schools in the Archdiocese of Denver.  The purpose of the visit is to meet the administration and pastor, gain an insight into school operations, visit classrooms, teachers, and students, and to listen to recommendations for the Office of Catholic Schools.  The teachers did a great job of conducting class with the utmost fidelity; in other words, we don't do canned activities to impress guests.  If we mean what we say and say what we mean each day, then classrooms speak for themselves.  That was today!  I am happy to write that he was quite impressed with our school.  Here are some of the things he observed:
  • He enjoyed visiting the Preschool classrooms and commented on the level of engagement displayed by the youngsters.
  • The Middle School religion class was engaged in a lesson and the students were all working and focused.  Those Middle School students Mr. Kijewski spoke directly to were respectful and authentic.
  • He observed Mrs. Tills' Kindergarten students identify words during a SMARTBoard activity.  It was wonderful to see the little hands go up when they wanted to provide the answers.
  • Both 1st Grade classrooms were spot on too!  Ms. Rusin and her students were working on a teacher directed activity and Mrs. Holligan's students were transitioning to a math test.
  • He observed a robust art classroom with students working on the Google Doodle contest (Google logo design).
  • He observed orderly 2nd and 3rd Grade students transitioning from class to class.
  • He lauded the fact that the majority of our teachers have taught at BSCS for several years (knowing that in many places, teacher turnover is high).
Mr. Kijewski gained an understanding from Father Chris, Sara Alkayali, and yours truly of where the school was, where it is and what structures are in place, and where we are going as a Preschool through 8th grade Catholic School.  He was quite pleased to hear that we have implemented education best-practices for curriculum mapping, curriculum audit, data collection, aligned lesson planning, collaborating in professional learning communities, classroom observations (formal and informal observations, and weekly classroom visits), technology upgrades, staffing, my five pages of annual goals, this year's writing and reading across the curriculum initiative, general forms of communicating with families and staff, retaining our Catholic identity, and how we celebrate our culture and traditions.

It was a pleasure to present our school to our new Superintendent.  God bless our teachers for giving all they give for their students, for our dynamic students, and for you dear parents for investing in your children's future!
