Stations of the Nativity - All Ages Gathering
By Terese Lewis

This Sunday, December 13, adults are invited to join with children and youth for a Living Faith Advent gathering at 9:15am.  Amidst the busyness of the holiday season, we will be slowing down and taking time to dwell more deeply in the scripture readings for Advent.  Our Advent scriptures this year are rich with promises of justice, safety, joy, righteousness, mercy, forgiveness, salvation, peace, and freedom from worry and fear.  We will reflect on these hopeful promises at interactive prayer stations in the parish hall.  Each station will offer an opportunity to reflect upon the Advent readings and respond with a creative activity to deepen our personal connection with their messages of hope.  Following this time of reflection, we'll have the opportunity to make ornaments that will adorn our Christmas tree when it is decorated on December 20.  Please join us this Sunday as we celebrate this season of hopeful expectation and explore its meaning for our lives, here and now.
New Member Profile: Mary Ann & Bob Evander
Mary Ann Evander: My spiritual journey began as a cradle Catholic in St. Paul. As a student at the University of Minnesota I enjoyed worshiping with the faith community on campus and as a young adult joined a liberal church on the fringes of the tradition. But change was slow and in time I became disenchanted over the role of women in the Catholic Church.

When Bob and I married thirty years ago we blended our families to create a household of six. While our faith was a constant we lacked a church home in which to practice. We periodically made attempts to find a place that met our mutual needs without success. When we serendipitously visited St. Matthew's during the anniversary celebration in 2014 we both were taken with how warm and welcoming it is. It has it all: weekly Eucharist in a liturgical calendar, inspiring sermons, great music, a vibrant community with a strong social conscience.

On the practical side I enjoyed a satisfying career in Human Resource Management focusing on organizational and leadership development. Retirement has brought the freedom to explore various volunteer opportunities, regular workouts, participation in two book clubs, travel and best of all: time with our six grandchildren who are far-flung in Washington DC, Las Vegas and Eden Prairie.

It feels as though Bob and I were led to St. Matthew's; I am happy and grateful to have found this wonderful place.

Bob Evander: I joined St. Matthew's because it is the most welcoming and inviting place I have ever been.  During the first service I attended here, Blair invited everyone to the communion table in the most loving and respectful ways I have ever heard; she included everyone without exception.  I will never forget that experience.  It warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes.  For me, every service has been welcoming and inviting and it always feels like where I need to be and for that I am very grateful.

My journey to St. Matthew's has been filled with gifts, graces, and challenges and if I had to say what I have become over time, I guess I would say I have become a Christian Buddhist.  I was baptized a Lutheran and confirmed a Presbyterian and while trying to find my way in the world I have found a little solace in some of the aspects of Buddhism. If nothing else, I have learned humility of the soul and have had to answer the door a number of times when Karma knocks.

My greatest love is my family followed closely by experiences in the wilderness.  I retired from forty years as a software developer but deep in my heart I knew I should have been a forest ranger.  The wilderness soothes my soul and time spent hiking, backpacking, canoeing, and exploring is the best.  I have been in the martial arts for the greater part of my life and have especially enjoyed the times teaching and sharing this age old tradition.  I am probably the most happy when serving in some capacity.

Coming January 2016 - Financial Peace University

Beginning January 3, St. Matthew' s will offer a practical  class on exploring personal finances from a Christian perspective.  Taught by Dwight Zscheile and John Tillotson, it covers topics such as debt, saving, insurance, retirement, real estate and giving.  The course requires registration beforehand - to learn more and sign up online, please follow this link. There is a $93 fee and partial scholarships are available. Below is a personal reflection by church member Dan Glienke on what he and his wife Kim learned from the Financial Peace University course:

Dan Glienke: At the end of 2006 as we reviewed all the wonderful blessings in our new life together - Kim and I were married, we bought a new house, car, she moved from Mississippi to St. Paul, I moved from Minnetonka and Kim got a new job as a counselor with the state.  All were great blessings, however it was also an expensive year.

We began looking to plan a way to bring our finances more in line.  Later that year Kim and I went to visit her uncle and family in Franklin, TN.  On Sunday we attended church with them, on our way out I picked up a flyer which listed Dave Ramsey's Seven Baby Steps.  Once home, we read baby step 2 - payoff all your debt from smallest to largest using the debt snowball.  Talking to Kim about it, she was on board - she is naturally financially conservative, however I was an average American - only worried how much the payment was.  I've been following Dave Ramsey ever since, reading his books, listening to his show and taking the training.  I'm sure I annoyed Kim from time to time with a new thought about something I've learned.

Over the next five years we worked our way through the baby steps and now we are on baby step 6 - paying off our house early.  It was hard at times, in the end we have found the greatest giving and wealth building tool is our income, but as Dave says "if it is all committed to payments you will not be doing much of either."
Circles of Trust Ministry
By the Rev. Blair Pogue

Have you ever had someone listen to you, really listen, without any interruptions? Have you ever made an important decision with the help of wise people who knew how to create a safe place for you to explore your options?
If you have had those experiences, or want to learn how to create them for other people, you are encouraged to come to the Circles of Trust information sessions
January 10 at noon in the Library and over dinner after the 5:30 pm service.  At these sessions Shannon Livingston-Harris and I will give a brief overview of the Circles of Trust ministry, especially what it is and why we think it is important for St. Matthew's to offer it.

The mandatory training sessions for this ministry are Monday, January 25 and Monday, February 8 from 6:30-9 pm in St. Matthew's Library. They will be led by spiritual directors from the Christos Center for Spiritual Formation. Anyone interested is welcome to go through the training, regardless of whether or not you are interested in serving in the Circles of Trust ministry. Those who want to serve will then be a part of a monthly spiritual direction group where they will experience what it is like to be a listener, as well as the person seeking guidance. When the group of listeners are ready, we will officially launch this ministry.

Over the years, many individuals have come to me seeking answers to important questions: what career path does God desire for me? Should I move away from family, friends, and my church community to accept a new job? What is the new thing God is stirring up in me? It has been such a privilege to walk with these persons, and I have often asked their permission to have 2-3 members of our faith community join me for up to two hours, offering an atmosphere of prayer, expansive leading questions, and silences, in which those seeking to hear God's voice and direction can listen in a safe environment without distractions or agendas. These sessions have been some of the holiest moments I've experienced at St. Matthew's.

This is a quiet, contemplative time reflecting the Advent theme of hopeful waiting.

Blue House Boutique: A Celebration For All
By Nancy Hall

I never met Beatrice Garubanda, but I know something about her strength of character through those who would not let her dream die in 2005.  And I have learned what dedication truly means from the scores of individuals who have served or are now serving on the HMI Board, the Boutique Committee, and staff of the Boutique from set up through sales, lunch, and checkout to take down.  I haven't met all of the crafters and kitchen wizards who contribute their time and talents, but their spirit of generosity is evident in every stitch, stroke, and stir of the spoon.  I couldn't possibly know every customer who comes through our doors, but there is a commonality of appreciation for the creativity and craftsmanship they find and a sense of support as we hear over and over in comments like, "I love this boutique because of the quality you offer--and because it's for such a good cause."

So, let's all celebrate the success of the 2015 Blue House Boutique which earned a record-breaking $20,000 to help provide sustenance, shelter, and schooling for the girls.  I may never meet any of the girls from The Blue House, but I feel blessed to be a part of a caring community who selflessly reaches out in love and service to give them hope for the future.
