Ordination Service June 20

Two important people from St. Matthew's will be ordained next week - Lisa Wiens Heinsohn to the Transitional Deaconate (as a Deacon) and Reed Carlson to the Priesthood. The Summer Ordination will take place Saturday, June 20 at 1:00pm at the Breck School Fieldhouse (123 Ottawa Ave N, Golden Valley, MN 55422).  All are invited to attend this worship service and ordination. In the procession, parishioner Brynn Stember will carry our own St. Matthew's banner, created in 1985 by parishioner Ruth Donhowe. The special prayer banner from the recent faith forum with our fabric prayer ribbons, along with the banners from the parishes of other ordinands, will be placed on a wall as a decoration.

Sunday, June 21 at the 9:30am service will be another joyous day, as Reed Carlson will preside and preach and Lisa will serve as a deacon for the first time.  The Sunday Evening Ensemble, led by Jeff Kidder will provide the music (since both ordinands led the evening service).   Plan to stay afterward for a celebratory brunch in the parish hall.  Please bring a brunch dish or dessert to share and contact Rosa Uy to let her know what you would like to contribute.
The Ministry & Gifts of Reed Carlson

Reed Carlson served as St. Matthew's first Sunday Night Ministry Director, organizing the evening service and dinner after authoring a campus ministry grant, given by the national Episcopal Church, to provide seed money for campus ministry startups.  The application process was very competitive and it was wonderful to receive this grant which helped us launch our current evening service.

Several St. Matthew's parishioners shared their reflections on Reed's ministry and his impact on our church:

  • "I have so appreciated watching you in action and listening to you preach.  Your commitment to the parish and especially the Sunday evening service has been tremendous. As I mentioned when I spoke about stewardship, St Matthew's has exported a lot of gifts and talent to our community and I believe you will be one of the next big gifts."  - John Tillotson
  • "Reed has been such a leader in our congregation the last few years, being instrumental in creating the new youth-oriented worship service on Sunday evenings and in its success through his steadfast love, attendance, interaction with the congregation and giving of himself through thoughtful and thought-provoking sermon/reflections. He seems so rooted in his faith and natural in his ability to share it and encourage it in others." - Jenny Bach
  • "I just wanted to let you know what you have meant to us over the last 2 years at St Matthews. You are so knowledgeable and bright with a great sense of humor. Your sermons are relevant and your style is very engaging. I wish you continued success in all you do, you are a special person." - Tracy Dunnwald
  • "I have watched and heard Reed develop into a fine leader and preacher in the church.  His sermons are some of the finest, combining humor, personal story, intellectual research and profound realization of the Gospel. He also is a very deep person and giver of prayer."   -Bob Hardman

We give special thanks and appreciation to those from St. Matthew's who supported the ordinands in the discernment process - Marcia Roepke for Reed Carlson and Judy Johnson for Lisa Wiens Heinsohn.

The Ministry & Gifts of Lisa Wiens  Heinsohn

Lisa Wiens Heinsohn has served as the Director of the Sunday Evening Ministry at St. Matthew's for the last several years.  After she is ordained as a deacon, she will remain with us at the Evening Service for another year and will also serve as deacon for the Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Minneapolis.  The following parishioners commented on Lisa's ministry and the impact she has made in her brief yet fruitful time with us.
  • "Lisa has been a crucial apostle and sister during my faith journey at St. Matthew's. Her ministry is not so much what she does as what she is! Her greatest message has been her example of life and past experiences. Lisa is compassionate and loves everyone without judgments or expectations. She truly becomes the hands and feet of our Lord Jesus in every moment of her life. I am so grateful that our Lord gave me the opportunity to share this journey with such a beautiful soul. Lisa, this is an important time in your life as you prepare for a new chapter of ministry, a new beginning, a change and a new direction. God bless you!"   - Luis Mendoza
  • "I have learned and continue to learn about acceptance and deep love for God and the world by Lisa's example and passion for the way of Jesus. I appreciate her welcoming demeanor, and from my first day at St. Matthew's, she has welcomed me. Prayers and love to you Lisa in this next step of your journey." - Brynn Stember
  • "Lisa is a dynamic leader who is gifted in sensing and articulating the presence of the Holy Spirit in individual parishioners and the St. Matthew's community. Through her character and deep faith, Lisa inspires transformation of individual hearts. She welcomes, soothes all who may feel estranged from a community or who live with brokenness while also modeling the way toward a closer relationship with God." - Shannon Livingston Hughes
  • "From an eclectic spiritual background, Lisa has found herself deeply rooted in the love of God. This deep love spills out to those she encounters, friend or stranger, in the constant hope of helping fellow pilgrims along their journey. No matter where people are in the faith, Lisa is a spiritual companion" - Judy Johnson
High Commitment Discernment Team Update

The High Commitment Discernment Team (HCDT) met on Saturday, May 30 to discuss all the organizations and individuals we met with in April and May. Each team member provided an overview of one organization or group, including how it fits with St. Matthew's pockets of energy, and volunteer opportunities. The tone of the meeting was celebratory and hopeful. Our journey as St. Matthew's HCDT has introduced us to people and organizations engaged in exciting and important work with those facing the greatest challenges in the Cities, especially homeless and poor children and youth. In addition to making important connections and learning a lot, all of us have a deepened our understanding and experience of the work of the Holy Spirit in our midst. We've grown in our understanding of the intersection between our faith and relationships with neighbors who are struggling.

At the end of our meeting, the Holy Spirit moved as the entire team decided they want to invite you, the people of St. Matthew's, into a year-long process of active learning and wondering involving prayer, pilgrimage, training, embodied or incarnational learning,  and reflection to prepare for what's next. We have learned and seen a lot, and believe that rather than presenting you with a couple of ministry possibilities, it is most faithful and important to invite you into a meaningful wondering process. Like our vestry, we are excited to be an agile church, a Christian learning organization that is willing to take the time needed to discern God's leading by engaging in hands-on experimentation, reflection, and training. In this year of discernment we hope and plan to do a number of things:

  • Continue to pray and dwell in scripture, being attentive to where our imagination is caught or captured.
  • Continue to ponder the following questions: who are our neighbors? What can we learn from our neighbors, and what can they learn from us?
  • Map out our congregational assets, not assuming that everyone is aware of all the gifts and social capital within the St. Matthew's community (while acknowledging that any population we work with also has important assets).
  • Invite members of our congregation to participate in specific pilgrimages around the Cities, visiting some of the places and people that have had the greatest impact on our thinking and theology of the relationship between faith and community engagement. We will also invite representatives of some of these organizations to come to St. Matthew's for conversation.
  • Offer training that will help us listen deeply to and engage with neighbors on the margins in life-giving ways through organizations like City House. We also plan to offer or let members of our faith community know about opportunities for antiracism training, and training for working with those who have experienced trauma.  This is training we can use in our daily ministries, in our current Social Justice ministries, and in other ministries and relationships we are and will be involved in.

All pilgrimages, ministry immersion experiences, and social justice ministry opportunities will include times for prayer and reflection on how we meet God and what we think God might be up to in the lives of those we worked with - as well as our own lives. Our time as members of the HCDT has been powerful and transformative. We look forward to continuing to explore God's leading in partnership and collaboration with you. Please let us know if you have any questions or input.

Faithfully,
