Children and Youth Art Show in the Undercroft Gallery

A wide variety of art created by the children and youth of St. Matthew's is on display in our Undercroft Gallery, titled "Creations from Wonderland."  A festive reception was held last Sunday, hosted by the Art Ministry to honor the young artists (some of whom are pictured above).

The show runs through June 26th.  During this time, take a moment to ask a young artist about their work - what is happening in this space?  What is life-giving about their offering?  How does this artwork make you feel?

Below are pictures of the Art Workshop held the week before the Art Show opening, which invited children from our parish as well as the surrounding neighborhood to drop in and try their hand at a canvas or two.  The workshop featured St. Anthony Park Elementary School Art teacher Courtney Oleen, shown working with the artists.

Loaves and Fishes May 24

Dave McKenna and his team would like to remind everybody that volunteers are still needed to help make St Matthews' hosting of Loaves and Fishes at the Dorothy Day Center a success.  May is typically a challenging month to recruit volunteers due to the Memorial Day holiday when many of our fellow parishioners will be heading out on their first trips of the summer.  A maximum of 2 hours is all we ask of you.  Food preparation begins at 2:00 PM and lasts until 3:30 or 4:00 .  If you can dice, chop, open cans, fry or place cookies and buns on a tray, we can certainly use your help.  Servers are needed at 4:00 PM.  The serving line actually starts at 4:30, and is over by 5:15. Like to bake?  Sign up to bake cookies or bars.  Many hands make light work to make this event a success.  You can sign up on the sheet in the parish hall, or

Listening to Don Samuels

St. Matthew's was fortunate to have our friend Don Samuels preach during the 10:30am service last Sunday.  It was an engaging and challenging message centered on "Oneness." A link to the sermon is here.

Don is a member of the Minneapolis School Board and a former City Council Member from North Minneapolis. We also had a life givng discussion with Don afterward in the library with a group of 20+ parishioners about racial inequality, poverty and possible avenues for St. Matthew's participation in social justice partnerships.

Cultivating a Culture of Discernment

We are being noticed in the wider world!  The St. Matthew's Vestry and our own Rev. Blair Pogue are featured in a well known national blog run by the Episcopal Church Foundation, titled ECF Vital Practices.  It offers Episcopal Vestry members across the country resources and tools to help them in their role as church leaders.

This particular story unpacks the practice of discernment -- deep listening and looking for the holy spirit at work in our church and the communities around us.  The St. Matthew's example shows other congregations how they can cultivate a culture of discernment (as we have).  The links to our story come at the end (so keep reading) with an article Blair wrote as well as part of our Annual Report....  Here is the link to the blog
