"Head of Christ," Rembrandt, 1650
|
Maybe he looked indeed much as Rembrandt envisioned Him in those small heads that seem in fact portraits of more than a model. A dark, still young, very intelligent face, a soul-mirror gaze of deep understanding, unjudging. That face, in extremis, would have clenched its teeth in a grimace not shown in even the great crucifixions. The burden of humanness (I begin to see) exacted from Him that He taste also the humiliation of dread, cold sweat of wanting to let the whole thing go, like any mortal hero out of his depth, like anyone who has taken a step too far and wants herself back. The painters, even the greatest, don't show how, in the midnight Garden, or staggering uphill under the weight of the Cross, He went through with even the human longing to simply cease, to not be. Not torture of body, not the hideous betrayals humans commit nor the faithless weakness of friends, and surely not the anticipation of death (not then, in agony's grip) was Incarnation's heaviest weight, but this sickened desire to renege, to step back from what He, Who was God, had promised Himself, and had entered time and flesh to enact. Sublime acceptance, to be absolute, had to have welled up from those depths where purpose drifted for mortal moments. -- Denise Levertov

Spring Clean-Up This Saturday, 9 am to noon
This Saturday morning from 9 am to noon, the church will undergo its annual spring cleaning and the more people who volunteer, the faster the tasks will go. Unfortunately, the weather doesn't look like it will cooperate for outdoor clean-up, so you won't need to bring your rakes and leaf bags, but there will still be plenty of indoor jobs that could use your elbow grease! Please contact Liz Morrison if you have any questions, lmorrison0063@yahoo.com or 651-341-8769. Volunteers will meet in the undercroft, and coffee and donuts will be provided!

Help Needed for Career Fair
Parishioner Sarah Sannes teaches Career Explorations class to kindergarteners through sixth graders at Obama Elementary School in St. Paul. She is organizing the school's first Career Fair which will be held on Tuesday, April 16 from 5 to 6:30 pm. The goal is to expose students to different jobs and help them learn about what is done at the job, what kind of college or training was needed, etc. Incorporating some type of hands-on activity so they can experience a small piece of that job would be best. Tables will be set up in the school library and students will go around to various "booths" to talk and learn. If you are interested in helping in this way, please contact Sarah at sarah.sannes@spps.org or 651-690-1217. Thank you!

Thank You from Ed Lotterman
"I want to thank all the members of St. Matthews for their support, prayers and encouragement as I dealt with my throat cancer over the past 11 months. I still have some problems with impaired sense of taste and ability to salivate, and eating remains a bit of a struggle. But the treatment seems to have been effective and my doctors say my prospects are very good going forward. I cannot tell you how much your prayers and support meant to me. I am especially thankful to the prayer team for their wonderful ministry."

Scripture for the Week
After telling a parable to the crowd at Jericho, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.'" So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They said, "The Lord needs it." Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying,
"Blessed is the king
who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven,
and glory in the highest heaven!"
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop." He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out."
Luke 19:28-40
