The ICD-10 effective date is now less than one year away and it's time to put your transition plan in place. There are numerous resources for learning about ICD-10, such as CMS eHealth University; and, as the effective date approaches, training will be available through your state health care associations and health information organizations. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities as soon as possible so that you are fully prepared to submit ICD-10 codes on October 1, 2015. We also encourage you to read our blog articles on the ICD-10: Delay of ICD-10 -- What's Next? Your ICD-10 Conversion -- Be Prepared!

Hi-One: Hi-Tech Provides ICD-10 Coding
|
Hi-Tech provided ICD-10 coding capability in March 2014, allowing you to retain your ICD-10 coding skills by dual-coding and researching ICD-10 equivalents for your residents' ICD-9 diagnosis codes. ICD-10 equivalent codes will not be submitted on your bills or your residents' MDS 3.0 records. Learn more at www.Hi-TechSoftware.com > Clients > Important Instructions > ICD-10 Functionality within the Hi-Tech System. In December, Hi-Tech will add more ICD-10 features to assist you in your ICD-10 coding practice and to allow you to test billing with ICD-10 codes, if needed. These features will help you to be ready for ICD-10, effective October 1, 2015.

Hi-Two: Hi-Tech to Post PPS Rates
|
CAUTION! Do not manually change your PPS rates.
Hi-Tech has posted the PPS rates--effective as of 10/1/2014--to our website. We have notified our Update Contact at your facility that the rates are available. That person must download these rates before you start October Medicare billing. To verify that the 10/1/2014 rates have been downloaded:
- Display a Hi-Tech menu.
- On your keyboard, press the [F1] key.
- On the pop-up window, look for DOWNLOAD...: PPS:
- Verify that the date is on or after 10/27/2014.
NOTE: Our PPS Rate update process moves the current rates to the Prior Year so that the correct rates are available for PPS and manual room rate adjustments when you select Prior Year.

Hi-Three: How to Not Submit Non-Medicare PPS Assessments
| For residents who have Medicare replacement plans, you must include their Medicare Numbers on their MDS. Through Edit Medical Record > Insurance, record the number in the Medicare No. field in the middle of the screen. This number will automatically complete MDS 3.0 item A0600B Medicare Number.
CMS requires that these MDS records be submitted according to the OBRA schedule. Example: For non-Medicare insurance reimbursement, follow the provider's requirements. If you complete a PPS assessment for a non-Medicare resident, under A410. Unit Certification or Licensure, select Do NOT submit this MDS Assessment. Medicare will not pay these claims. This provides the MDS for billing purposes and it will not be submitted to CMS.

Hi-Four: Use Hi-Tech Events to Track Census and Health-Related Events
|
The Hi-Tech Events modules allows you to track ER Visits, observation stays at the hospital, and bedholds. This feature is especially helpful to Maine facilities which must now report this information on the MDS 3.0 Section S that became effective on October 1, 2014.
Attend our Webinar, Resident Notes and Events on Monday, November 10 from 11 am to noon. Request an invitation from Webinars@Hi-TechSoftware.com.

Hi-Five: Hi-Tech EMR to be Available via Two Platforms
|
Our new EMR System will be available through both local and web-hosted platforms. Both platforms use a web-enabled GUI (Graphical User Interface). This means that you access the EMR via the web browser Internet Explorer.
The difference between the local and web-hosted options is where you store your EMR data.
- Local: Your facility stores EMR software and data on its own servers. The facility provides and maintains the hardware, networking, internet connection, security, backup, and other IT services.
- Web-hosted: Also known as Cloud or Software as a Service (SaaS), the EMR software and data are stored off-site on a hosting entity's server. Your facility provides onsite PCs, networking, and internet access. The host provides and maintains the storage server, security, data backup and other IT services. Web-hosting sites include:
- The central office for a group of facilities
- Cloud vendors who partner with Hi-Tech.
For more information on how to prepare for our new EMR, access the following: Planning Your Transition to an EMR? and the Hi-Tech EMR Planning Guide.
