Effective January 1, 2014, the American Medical Association (AMA) inactivated the CPT code 92506 (Evaluation of speech, language, communication, voice, and/or auditory processing) and replaced it with four new evaluation codes that are more specific. These new codes are:
- 92521 - Evaluation of speech fluency (e.g., stuttering, cluttering)
- 92522 - Evaluation of speech sound production (e.g., articulation, phonological process, apraxia, dysarthria)
- 92523 - Evaluation of language comprehension and expression (e.g., receptive and expressive language)
- 92524 - Behavioral and qualitative analysis of voice and resonance
Each of these codes requires the G HCPC Code.
For more information, please refer to the 2014 AMA CPT code book.
We have advised our Rehab Therapy and Resident Accounting System users to make these code changes to avoid rejected claims.
IMPORTANT: If your facility uses Hi-Tech's Rehab Therapy System and you have completed Speech Therapy Evaluations since 1/1/2014, please refer to the Hi-Tech Support email dated 01/16/14 that advises you to confirm the installation of Patches dated 1/16/14. You must then validate speech therapy time imported to MDS 3.0, Section O, item O400A.
ALSO: Under Resident Accounting, verify that the new codes have the correct Revenue Code, 444, and GN Modifier.
Please contact Hi-Tech Support if you did not receive these emailed instructions.
These code changes are included in the 2014 Medicare B Fee Schedule to be posted to the Hi-Tech website by January 24.
