NEWS & NOTES
Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley, in Israel and around the world.

Message from the CEO...

Good morning. By now you should have received the printed edition of the November Jewish VOICE, our "Giving Thanks" issue. Additional copies are available at the Federation offices, at each entrance on the Garden of Eden campus or you can view the digital eDITION by clicking here. Special thanks to our Editor, Jaidy Schweers, and Committee Chair, Meredith Rosenthal, for continually improving our monthly publication.

On Monday evening, our community came together for a special presentation entitled, Why Legacy? Why Now?, with Dena Morris Kaufman, Program Officer of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation's LIFE & LEGACY. Delaware is only one of eight communities to receive special incentive grant funding to implement this innovative and successful endowment program.

We hope everyone had an opportunity of voting on Tuesday as it serves as one of our most important civic duties. We congratulate  U.S. Senator Chris Coons, Rep. John Carney, Attorney General Matt Den, State Treasurer Ken Simpler and State Auditor Tom Wagner. Tuesday also marked a sad day in Israeli History as Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who played a prominent role in virtually all of Israel's history, was assassinated at a peace rally held in Tel Aviv in 1995. Click here to learn more.

On Wednesday evening, Federation's Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC), Israel & Overseas Committee, and Jewish Education Committee sponsored the Delaware premiere screening of the film, Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front. More than 100 attendees also had an opportunity to meet IDF soldier, Lieutenant Aviv Regev, whose unit was featured in the film as well as ask questions following the screening. Federation looks forward to bringing additional screenings to the community through our recent alliance with Jerusalem U.

Our Facilities Management Board (FMB) met on Thursday morning to review campus maintenance needs and support. We acknowledge and commend the leadership of FMB Chairs, Arnie Caine and Ken Kamm for their leadership and guidance. Special thanks to Jordan Smith, Sodexo General Manager/Facilities Director, for ensuring our campus needs are continually met.

The Jewish Federations of North America's General Assembly begins on Sunday, November 9th and ends Tuesday, November 11th and held in National Harbor, MD. Our Delaware delegation of 22 strong will be proudly representing the First State among the thousands of attendees throughout North America. Special thanks to Jenn Steinberg, Delegation Chair, for her ongoing leadership and enthusiasm.

The Biggs Museum (Dover, DE) is proud to host a lecture and screening by Julie Kohner entitled
Voices of the Generations on November 8, 2014 at 2 PM on the museum's first floor .

After the war, the speaker's parents, Hanna and Walter Kohner of Czechoslovakia, were reunited in California where Walter found work on This is Your Life, a popular TV program recounting the lives of guests through surprise visits with their friends and families. Hanna, a survivor of five concentration camps, was featured on a 1953 episode of This is Your Life and made history as the first Holocaust survivor to share her story on American national television.

Julie Kohner will play her mother's episode during this program and discuss the impact of this artistic medium on America's growing understanding of the Holocaust. Her parents went on to write a book about their unique experience of survival and reunion, as debuted on This is Your Life, entitled Hannah and Walter, A Love Story which will also be discussed.

Global Day of Jewish Learning
Sunday, November 16th

"Torah is the shared inheritance of all the Jewish people.

It does not belong to a special sect or an elite group of the Jews.
We have a responsibility to share our common heritage with all Jews.
We each get an equal share."

~ Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz

The Global Day of Jewish Learning is meant to imbue an appreciation for the texts that define us, and to inspire hope in the commonalities that unite us. Guided by the values of Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz - that Jewish texts should be available to all Jews, that the Torah belongs to us all - the Global Day will remind us that although we may be dispersed across the globe, we shall always stand together.

The Global Day of Jewish Learning brings the Jewish people together once a year to celebrate our shared Jewish texts through community based learning. The guiding values of the Global Day of Jewish Learning are: fostering Jewish unity, empowering individuals through increased Jewish knowledge, and creating meaningful shared experiences.
