NEWS & NOTES
Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley.

Message from the CEO...

On Monday evening I attended a "GA Pep Rally" at the home of Robin Kauffman Saran in an effort of educating and inspiring community members to attend the Jewish Federations of North America's General Assembly - November 9th-11th in National Harbor, MD. Jenn Steinberg is serving as our Delegation Chair and encourages you to join us in DC. Please see below article for more information or click here for the GA website.

Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) Director, Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt, accompanied more than 40 community clergy to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on Tuesday sponsored by the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Committee (HEC). Women who attended the International Lion of Judah Conference last month gathered at the home of Caryl Marcus-Stape to share their experiences and discuss implementing best practices in Delaware. Our community is well represented on a national level with Suzanne Grant, Robin Kauffman Saran and Connie Sugarman all serving on National Women's Philanthropy with each holding leadership positions.

Last night was Federation's inaugural Men's Nite Out "Scotch and Steak" event at the Buena Vista Conference Center in Newcastle. The former Governor's Mansion provided the perfect setting for attendees to network, learn more about Federation and the difference we make locally and globally. We also heard from renowned scotch whiskey connoisseur and columnist Joshua London. Special thanks to our Co-Chairs, Chris Alonzo and Michael Longwill, as well as Federation staff Wendy Berger and Andrea Bock for ensuring a seamless and memorable evening.

This morning I will be meeting with the Executive Directors of our five local beneficiary agencies; Albert Einstein Academy, Jewish Family Services of Delaware, Siegel JCC, The Kutz Home and University of Delaware Hillel. Through Federation's Annual Campaign we allocate critical funding to our local agencies and programs every year. Support the 2014 Annual Campaign today with your tax-deductible gift via our secure website by clicking here.

Federation also supports myriad programs in Israel including our special partnership in Arad. Through our alliance with the Ethiopian National Project (ENP), we are now supporting the ENP SPACE Scholastic Assistance Program that is MUCH more than just scholastic assistance! It's about preparing for a better future, developing the will to be a part of and give back to Israeli society, as well as broadening horizons through extracurricular activities. Learn more about ENP SPACE here.

On Sunday I will join more than 50 community leaders comprised of Federation's Board of Directors as well as the boards of our beneficiary agencies and synagogues for Leadership Training. Jonah Halper, author of, "Date Your Donors," will be the featured speaker and facilitator. Later that afternoon, Federation's Ben-Gurion Society will be having a program at the Delaware Nature Center featuring former Olympic Canadian Swimmer, Karen James, who will share her story about the 1972 Munich Olympics. Special thanks to BGS Chairs, Lauren and George Danneman.

Voices of the Generations: This is Your Life

November 8, 2014 | 2:00 P.M.

Biggs Museum of American Art, 406 Federal Street, Dover DE 19901

The Biggs Museum (Dover, DE) is proud to host a lecture and screening by Julie Kohner entitled Voices of the Generations on November 8, 2014 at 2 PM on the museum's first floor .

After the war, the speaker's parents, Hanna and Walter Kohner of Czechoslovakia, were reunited in California where Walter found work on This is Your Life, a popular TV program recounting the lives of guests through surprise visits with their friends and families. Hanna, a survivor of five concentration camps, was featured on a 1953 episode of This is Your Life and made history as the first Holocaust survivor to share her story on American national television.

Julie Kohner will play her mother's episode during this program and discuss the impact of this artistic medium on America's growing understanding of the Holocaust. Her parents went on to write a book about their unique experience of survival and reunion, as debuted on This is Your Life, entitled Hannah and Walter, A Love Story which will also be discussed.
