NEWS & NOTES
Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley.

Message from the CEO...

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending a Federation Past-Presidents discussion hosted at the beautiful Lodge Lane Assisted Living facility. It is always an educational and inspiring opportunity to leverage the wealth of experience and history this important group represents. Special thanks to Federation President, Jack Blumenfeld, for coordinating this special gathering.

On Monday, Federation's Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) worked feverishly on getting Sears to take down a swastika ring posted on its 3rd party merchant site. Our efforts resulted in significant media attention including NBC10, WDEL Radio and the News Journal. In fact, the story quickly became national news covered by The Algemeiner as well as a segment on Tuesday's Today Show. We recognize a number of community leaders for their due diligence including JCRC Director Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt, Meredith Rosenthal, Jenn Steinberg, David Margules, Donna Harlev, Ali Mendelson Winaker, Shoshana Kohn and others. Please also sign our online petition for Amazon to take down a similar merchant site as well.

On Tuesday, Federation was notified it has been recognized as an award recipient in the 2014 FundRaising Success Gold Awards for Fundraising Excellence. This annual award competition honors some the best fundraising campaigns of the past year. Federation landed the top award in the Special Events category for our MOSHAV Concert at the World Cafe Live at the Queen last fall. The event poster designed by Jaidy Schweers previously received several industry awards for creative excellence as well.

Later this morning I will be attending a leadership training session through the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement (DANA) entitled, "The Work of the Leader". DANA serves as an invaluable resource to Delaware nonprofits and we are privileged to be active members of this community organization. This afternoon I will be attending Federation's Jewish Fund for the Future Investment Committee meeting Chaired by Suzanne Grant. Thanks to their financial oversight and wise stewardship, our total managed assets surpass $22 million. Having a strong endowment ensures the continuity of a vibrant Jewish community Today, Tomorrow and TOGETHER.

Tonight I plan on celebrating Simchat Torah at Temple Beth El in Newark that will include a PJ Library story and song time for children under 5 with a reading of "It's A Mitzvah" at 6:30 PM followed by a 7:00 PM evening service with dancing, an interactive unrolling of the Torah scrolls and lots of fun energetic music with TBE Klezmer band, Thread of Blue. To quote Rabbi Micah Becker-Klein, "Lift up your spirit, lift up your voices, lift up a Torah!"

Voices of the Generations: This is Your Life

November 8, 2014 | 2:00 P.M.

Biggs Museum of American Art, 406 Federal Street, Dover DE 19901

The Biggs Museum (Dover, DE) is proud to host a lecture and screening by Julie Kohner entitled Voices of the Generations on November 8, 2014 at 2 PM on the museum's first floor .

After the war, the speaker's parents, Hanna and Walter Kohner of Czechoslovakia, were reunited in California where Walter found work on This is Your Life, a popular TV program recounting the lives of guests through surprise visits with their friends and families. Hanna, a survivor of five concentration camps, was featured on a 1953 episode of This is Your Life and made history as the first Holocaust survivor to share her story on American national television.

Julie Kohner will play her mother's episode during this program and discuss the impact of this artistic medium on America's growing understanding of the Holocaust. Her parents went on to write a book about their unique experience of survival and reunion, as debuted on This is Your Life, entitled Hannah and Walter, A Love Story which will also be discussed.
