NEWS & NOTES
Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley.

Message from the CEO...
"If being Jewish means anything, it means knowing that our world, God's world, is not working the way it was meant to - and somehow you are implicated in its repair."
Leonard Fein, z"l, Founder of the National Jewish Coalition for Literacy and MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger and co-founder and editor of Moment Magazine, who died Wednesday evening. May his memory be a blessing.

On Tuesday we remembered the thirteen Jewish writers and poets who were arrested for treason and espionage (and eventually killed) 62 years ago as part of a campaign to rid the Soviet Union of Jewish culture. The incident is referred to as the "Night of the Murdered Poets". Learn more here.

The Federation staff welcomed Community Shlicha Lior Ron to Delaware and as part of our valued team. Lior arrived late Tuesday evening and is spending the next 10 months building a living bridge between our community and Israel. Our Israel & Overseas Committee led by Michele Margules and Lelaine Nemser, welcomed Lior on Wednesday evening at the JCC Barbeque which provided a wonderful way of meeting members of the community.

Federation Welcomes New Community Shlicha, Lior Ron

Shalom Dear Friends!

First of all, thank you for the warm welcome! It made me realize how lucky I am to be a shlicha in such friendly and great community like Delaware. I wanted to share with you a few things about myself:

I'm originally from a small Moshav in the center of the country, near a sea called "Beit- Herut". My mother, Idith, is a swimmer;  she swam in the last macabiyha in Israel and won the silver medal.  My father, David, works in air conditioning. I have a big sister, Tal, who is pregnant with her first child and a younger brother, Idan, who just got back from his year of travel around the world after the army.

My Moshav is one of the fewest places in Israel that did not get rockets in any war or operations, because it's right in the middle, near the sea, with a very small population (not very attractive for Hamas) J

I also served in the IDF for 3 and half years in a combat unit called "PATRIOT" as an operator, instructor and a commander. I still go to reserve duty every year for a few days until I'm 45 years old.

I graduated with a BA in Communication from the IDC in Herzeliya. Through my studies, I received a teaching certificate in civics and graduated to become an educator and a professional teacher in Junior high school. I see myself working in education for the rest of my life and that's what brought me to the Jewish Agency and to this Shlichut.

I arrived in Delaware at the best time due to the situation in Israel and "Operation Protective Edge". It's a true privilege to represent Israel around the world and to show people the story that is not covered in the news. I want the community to know what it is really like to live in Israel and to hear my story.

Israel, in my opinion, is the most magical place on earth. I wish I can show each one of you the REAL Israel and one without the conflict: The land, sights, culture and the people.

There's so much for me to learn about Delaware, what it is like to live as a Jew in the diaspora, the difficulties and the unique connections that you have to Israel.

Please feel free to contact me by email, phone at 302/427-2100 or on Facebook. It's a true honor for me to meet and work with you!

Your shlicha,

Lior

General Assembly

November 9-11, 2014

National Harbor, MD

The current crisis and the Federation response has been extraordinary. And it underscores just how important our work is as a community.

It is also a reminder of what makes the GA so important. It's not just an exciting event-it's the most powerful symbol of what we do.

With Israel in peril, we know that our solidarity as a global Jewish community is more essential than ever. But it's also essential that we, Federation volunteer leaders and professionals continue to explore new ways of thinking and new forms of leadership. That we discover how to strengthen and invigorate our communities in fresh ways. That's what GA 2014 is all about. And it's going to be electrifying.

So get ready to engage with dynamic speakers, from prominent political figures to renowned intellectuals and philanthropic visionaries. Get ready for unexpected and innovative thinking. Get ready to be inspired to new heights. And get ready to have an incredible time doing it.
