Message from the CEO...

,

Over the past three weeks, a new level of anxiety has swept across Israel. Not only have Hamas terrorists continued to fire rockets at Israeli civilian centers, but also the Israel Defense Forces have discovered an extensive network of terrorist tunnels that reach inside the Jewish State. Of the ten Israeli soldiers who were killed earlier this week, five were ambushed by terrorists emerging from a tunnel. The existence of these tunnels and the threats they pose to Israel's security cannot be overstated.

Many of the nation's top Jewish leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., on short notice Monday to join U.S. lawmakers in expressing solidarity with the embattled state of Israel. The event, held at the National Press Club, highlighted unity within the Jewish community among the three main denominational movements and across the political spectrum.

The Senate passed a resolution Tuesday that states the Senate's support of Israel's right to defend itself from Hamas rocket attacks and condemns a "bias" United Nation's report. S.Res. 526 was passed through a unanimous consent agreement. The resolution also condemns a United Nation's Human Right Council report that stated Israel had committed human rights violations against the Palestinian people.

John Elzufon, JCRC Chair, had a poignant opinion piece published in Tuesday's News Journal. You can read it here.

This Shabbat we offer especially prayers for peace.

General Assembly

November 9-11, 2014

National Harbor, MD

Day 25. Over 2,500 rockets have been fired at Israel. The current crisis and the Federation response has been extraordinary. And it underscores just how important our work is as a community.

It is also a reminder of what makes the GA so important. It's not just an exciting event-it's the most powerful symbol of what we do.

With Israel in peril, we know that our solidarity as a global Jewish community is more essential than ever. But it's also essential that we, Federation volunteer leaders and professionals continue to explore new ways of thinking and new forms of leadership. That we discover how to strengthen and invigorate our communities in fresh ways. That's what GA 2014 is all about. And it's going to be electrifying.

So get ready to engage with dynamic speakers, from prominent political figures to renowned intellectuals and philanthropic visionaries. Get ready for unexpected and innovative thinking. Get ready to be inspired to new heights. And get ready to have an incredible time doing it.
