Message from the CEO...

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment to improve the world."
- Anne Frank

Greetings!,

Earlier this week, nine young adults from our community attended TribeFest, an entertaining, interactive and educational celebration that drew over 1,500 Jewish young adults (ages 22-45) from across North America to New Orleans, LA. Through presentations by dynamic leaders in politics, entertainment, music, art, food, religion and other aspects of Jewish life, TribeFest offered attendees many ways to connect to their own Judaism and how they see themselves as part of the community. Thanks to Jennifer and Mitch Steinberg for chairing  the Delaware contingency and YLD Director, Julie James, for staffing this experience.

JFNA's Israel Office reports on escalating tension on the Syrian border. On Tuesday, four Israeli soldiers were wounded when an explosion hit their jeep. One soldier is in critical condition. The IDF paratroopers were standing by their vehicle when an explosive device was detonated beside them. According to the IDF, the attack was likely a failed kidnapping attempt. The Israel Air Force has responded by targeting several Syrian strongholds in the Golan Heights, including military headquarters, artillery batteries and a Syrian army training base. Despite the tensions, Israel has been providing free humanitarian medical aid to Syrian refugees crossing the border, providing critical assistance to those in need.

Last night, our community gathered at Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth for Voices For Israel featuring Sergeant Benjamin Anthony/IDF Reserves. Thank you to AKSE for co-sponsoring this engaging series with Jewish Federation of Delaware.

This week's parsha, Shemini, tells the story about Aaron and his two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu. The commentary gleamed from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and his weekly, Covenant & Commentary, focuses on different kinds of leadership; Aaron's reluctance to accept it and his sons' overeagerness to exercise leadership. To do anything great we have to be aware of two temptations; one is the fear of greatness: who am I? The other is being convinced of your greatness: who are they? I can do it better. We can do great things if;
(a) the task matters more than the person,
(b) we are willing to do our best without thinking ourselves superior to others, and
(c) we are willing to take advice, the thing Nadav and Avihu failed to do.

People do not become leaders because they are great. They become great because they are willing to serve as leaders. It does not matter that we think ourselves inadequate. So did Moses. So did Aaron. What matters is the willingness, when challenge calls, to say, Hineni, "Here I am."

TOGETHER We Do Extraordinary Things.

Shabbat Shalom,

People To People International/Delaware Chapter

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

Cokesbury Village, Main Auditorium

7:00 PM

Presented by John Elzufon, Esq.,
Chair of the Jewish Community Relations Committee, Jewish Federation of Delaware

"There's been nothing like it in human history. A small and ancient people loses its land and forgets how to speak its language; wanders defenselessly for hundreds, thousands, of years throughout the world with its God and its sacred books; meets with persecution, violence, dispossession, banishment, mass murder; refuses to give up; refuses to surrender its faith; continues to believe that it will one day be restored to the land it lost; manages in the end, by dint of its own efforts, against all odds, to gather itself from the four corners of the earth and return to that land; learns again to speak the language of its old books; learns again to bear arms and defend itself; wrests its new-old home from the people who had replaced it; entrenches itself; builds; fructifies; fortifies; repulses the enemies surrounding it; grows and prospers in the face of all threats."

Please join People To People for a 30-45 minute presentation on Israel's agricultural developments, medical & IT technologies, social aspects, diversity, education, culture, religious expression, and form of government/ democracy.  Question & answer session to follow as well as light refreshments.
