Message from the CEO...

Greetings!,

Good Morning.

This past Monday evening, the newly formed Delaware ADL Leadership Group gathered at the home of Reiko and Barry Kayne to hear Frank Meeink share his, "Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead," a life-changing story. Special thanks to Brian Legum, who is serving as the Group Co-Chair and coordinated this memorable evening.

On Tuesday morning our Facilities Management Board, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Arnie Caine and Ken Kamm, reviewed active and anticipated projects as well as analyzed budgets in preparation for our end of month meeting. Managing the Weinberg Garden of Eden Campus is an enormous undertaking and our community is grateful for the level of engagement and expertise of our FMB leadership team.

On Wednesday, we held an initial meeting to discuss our community's interest in attending TribeFest, the Jewish Federations of North America's "unconference" for young adults. This bi-annual event is scheduled March 16-18, 2014 in New Orleans, LA. Thanks to Jenn and Mitch Steinberg who have agreed to chair the Delaware TribeFest contingency and will assist staff in planning and recruiting a strong group of young adults to join them this year.

Thanks to Ken Kamm who led an interesting discussion on Thursday morning regarding the Pew Research: A Portrait of Jewish Americans at the Siegel JCC. It was an engaging dialogue that also allowed time for community comments, implications and opportunities for action. For those interested in downloading a copy of the report, click here. JFNA has curated a collection of news coverage and commentary on the PEW survey of American Jewry. This resource is regularly updated as more articles appear - click here to access.

Last night was our Opening Reception for our new Emerging Leadership Project (ELP) participants in the Siegel JCC Senior Lounge. This year we have 17 participants who will be meeting monthly to learn about our local and global Jewish community and the many ways of getting involved and making an impact. Special thanks to our ELP Co-Chairs, Regan Davis and Kim and Jeff Felzer.

And later this morning, our Audit Committee will be meeting with our new auditors, Belfint, Lyons & Shuman to review our latest audit. Thank you to Audit Committee Co-Chairs, Marty Mand and Barbara Schoenberg, for their ongoing guidance and counsel.

Shabbat Shalom,

Andy Statman Trio
Arden Gild Hall
Thursday, October 24th
8:00 PM

Returning to Gild Hall with his trio, Andy Statman is a master of Klezmer clarinet and bluegrass Mandolin. He melds these with a distinctive musical personality akin to jazz and classical music.  His styling has made him one of the most requested session and side men in the business with regular appearances with Bela Fleck, Dave Grisman, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and David Bromberg.  Andy is also known for his deeply reflective music in the Hebrew and Kletzmer tradition, appearing at religious events and very well known as an expressive proponent of the Judaic tradition in music.  It's unabashedly American music, Andy says, proud of his U.S. roots, and the spirit of individuality, creativity and compassion it embodies. Or it's deeply religious hasidic prayer, intended to embrace his Jewish heritage, he explains in a soft voice. And it's jazz, he'd say, on its lonely search for the spirit of lost worlds. It's all of those things, because, although they may seem worlds apart, "They all come together in me. If you're in touch with your Judaism," Andy says, his voice cracking, "you experience things..." He is misty by now, and it is clear that this is a man who always speaks and plays from the very roots of his soul.
