Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley.
|
|
Good Morning. On Tuesday evening, Federation held its Major Gifts Event at the home of Federation President Jack Blumenfeld and his wife Karen Jacobs. Our featured speaker was Linda Adler Hurwitz, Jewish Federations of North America National Campaign Chair, who visited with us from Baltimore. Linda spoke about living a life of giving - through volunteerism, philanthropy and a shared vision in tikkun olam - making the world a better place.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the 2014 Campaign will include a Matching Gift Fund where all new and increased gifts of 10% or more, will be matched dollar-for-dollar. These matching funds will help us grow the 2014 Campaign and allow us to maintain the level of support to our local, national and overseas partners. For more information, please contact Wendy Berger, Development Director. Next week, community leadership representing our five beneficiary agencies and area synagogues will be getting together for a joint Leadership Development program with Lou Feldstein, presented by Federation. This collaboration is another example that TOGETHER We Do Extraordinary Things. May you be inscribed for a good and healthy year. Tzom Kal,
Seth J. Katzen

JEWISH FEDERATION OF DELAWARE STATEMENT
IN RESPONSE TO THE CURRENT SITUATION IN SYRIA
During the Jewish High Holy Days, we celebrate the creation of the world.
With this as backdrop, the ongoing conflict in Syria and the killing and displacement of tens of thousands of men, women and children - regardless of the type of weapon used - makes it difficult to approach this holiday's festivities with unreserved joy. Furthermore, in the eyes of civilized nations across the world, the use of chemical weapons is intolerable.
As a Jewish community, which has suffered disproportionately at the hands of those who would destroy us, we have particular empathy for those who are targeted, dispossessed and murdered because of who they are. And we have learned from history the dangers of staying silent - and the importance of affirming "Never again!"
We are proud of our partners who have assisted in relief efforts to help the now more than 2 million Syrian refugees: http://www.jdc.org/jcdr/where-we-work/syrian-refugees-in-jordan.html
Many across the country and within our local community are torn with what they think should be done to best respond to the current situation. We respect the diversity of opinions in our midst.
While it is not our role to dictate the specifics of what, if any, action the United States should take in addressing the Syrian atrocities, the Jewish Federation of Delaware and our Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) believes that the following core principles should guide our country's response:
- American leadership and credibility in the modern age has been a crucial component of maintaining stability - especially in the Middle East - and preventing such atrocities from occurring. It is important that we recognize the implications of this pivotal role.
- Our enemies are watching what we do just as closely as our friends, and any response should take into account the message we will be sending to other dangerous foes, such as Iran, Hezbollah and North Korea.
- What will enhance our influence and standing as a beacon of hope, values and human rights throughout the world.
We wish the best to all our friends and neighbors for a year filled with peace, security, wisdom and satisfaction.

Community Journey to Israel
Mission and General Assembly
November 3-13, 2013Chairs, Lisa Dadone-Weiner and Henry Weiner
Immediately ahead of the 2013 General Assembly in Jerusalem, the Delaware Jewish community will journey to Israel for an amazing mission that will reveal Israel in a new way, forge special connections to the land and people, and provide a deeper understanding of the important work of Federation.
We will then join the GA, where thousands of current and emerging Jewish leaders hear from world-class speakers and learn from each other to shape an even brighter future for Israel and the Jewish people.
Travel dates are November 3rd - November 13th, 2013
For this trip, we are fortunate to have Itai Tennanbaum as our guide. Itai was the guide for our community mission to Israel in 1999, and he is well known for making the journey in Israel an emotional, spiritual and educational adventure.
