NEWS & NOTES
Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley.

Message from the CEO...

Greetings!,

Good Morning.

This past Sunday morning, more than 20 members of our community from different synagogues came together at the Siegel JCC for our final Community Softball game of the summer. Special thanks to Rabbi Saks for coordinating this program and for the many players who participated throughout the summer.

Following the game, I was invited to attend the University of Delaware Hillel Board of Directors Retreat at the home of community leader and UD Hillel Board member, Eve Slap. It was meaningful to participate in this dialogue and hear about the wonderful things happening on campus.

On Tuesday, our Jewish Education Committee under the leadership of Co-chairs Allison Land and Connie Sugarman, met with representatives from area synagogues, Siegel JCC and BBYO. Through an application process, Federation will be funding select teen-based education programs that are open to the community.

On Wednesday, several members of Federation leadership attended a Regional Campaign Conference in Baltimore sponsored by the Jewish Federations of North America. This invaluable learning will be incorporated into the development of our 2014 Campaign Plan and utilized throughout the year. Special thanks to Immediate Past President, Robin Kauffman Saran, Connie Sugarman and Development Director, Wendy Berger, for representing Delaware at this important conference.

Yesterday, the September issue of the Jewish VOICE was mailed to our subscribers that will be received beginning this weekend. Additional copies are available throughout the Weinberg campus at each entry. You can also view the online e-dition here

Our community congratulates Neil Hockstein on his recent selection to the AABGU Zin Fellowship Leadership Development Program. Each cohort of Zin Fellows undertakes an in-depth immersion into the issues involved in the continuing development of the Negev. Neil represents Delaware in this prestigious two-year program of American Associates Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Federation Launches Outdoor Campaign
Look for billboards and posters throughout Delaware

Jewish Federation of Delaware was successful in negotiating a Public Service Announcement (PSA) Outdoor Campaign with ClearChannel Outdoor. By qualifying as a PSA Campaign, Federation benefits from having our boards posted at no charge based on space and location availability.

Our first board is posted on Kirkwood Highway near Duncan Road. A second location will soon be posted on I-95 Southbound near Exit 6.

Many thanks to ClearChannel Outdoor for their generosity and working with us in this capacity.

Completing the Journey
Historic aliyah of Ethiopian Jewry

Four hundred and fifty Ethiopian Jews arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport this week, greeted with hugs and kisses by hundreds of laughing and crying relatives - a scene Israel has practically grown accustomed to over the past few decades.

Yet the latest arrivals on Wednesday marked the closing chapter in a sweeping narrative, the historic aliyah of Ethiopian Jewry. Since 1948, but beginning in earnest with Operations Moses and Solomon, the combined efforts of the Jewish Federations, Jewish Agency, government of Israel and other partners have brought more than 92,000 Ethiopian Jews home.

Over the past three years, on 91 airlifts called "Operation Dove's Wings," some 7,800 Ethiopian Jews - half ages 15 or younger -- have arrived, supported by the Jewish Federations' "Completing the Journey" campaign to help bring this historic campaign to a close.

Community Journey to Israel
Mission and General Assembly
November 3-13, 2013
Chairs, Lisa Dadone-Weiner and Henry Weiner

Immediately ahead of the 2013 General Assembly in Jerusalem, the Delaware Jewish community will journey to Israel for an amazing mission that will reveal Israel in a new way, forge special connections to the land and people, and provide a deeper understanding of the important work of Federation.

We will then join the GA, where thousands of current and emerging Jewish leaders hear from world-class speakers and learn from each other to shape an even brighter future for Israel and the Jewish people.

Travel dates are November 3rd - November 13th, 2013

For this trip, we are fortunate to have Itai Tennanbaum as our guide. Itai was the guide for our community mission to Israel in 1999, and he is well known for making the journey in Israel an emotional, spiritual and educational adventure.
