Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley.

Good Morning.
On Monday, I traveled to Dover to meet with the new President of Congregation Beth Sholom, Cindy Konowitz. Our conversation reinforced the importance of having a visible Federation presence throughout the First State. As a direct outcome, we will be planning a PJ Library story telling program in Dover this spring. We congratulate the congregation on their 50th Anniversary milestone this upcoming November.
On Tuesday, I introduced our new shaliach, Adir Ben Tovim, to our Rabbis and Cantors (DERECH) at Congregation Beth Shalom. Later that evening our community came together at Frawley Stadium for Jewish Heritage Night with the Blue Rocks. Before the game, our Young Leadership Division coordinated a B.Y.O.B-B-Q in the parking lot with 30 attendees.
The Israel Action Center, The Washington Regional Office of the American Jewish Committee and The American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists sponsored a special conference call briefing on Wednesday featuring Noam Katz, Minister for Public Diplomacy at the Embassy of Israel. Mr. Katz discussed the current state of affairs in Israel focusing on the threat of a nuclear Iran and the Peace Process. Later that evening, Federation's Board of Directors approved the Audit Committee's recommendation of engaging a new firm for External Audit & Tax Services.
On Thursday, Federation finalized logistics in bringing Moshav Band to Wilmington on Thursday, October 10th at the World Cafe Live at the Queen for a special performance. For more information, please visit MoshavBand.com and stay tuned for more details about this upcoming evening to remember. This morning I will be meeting with John Elzufon, Chair of our Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) as we plan an agenda for the coming season. Holocaust Education Committee Chair, Regina Alonzo, will also be meeting with Federation staff later this afternoon as well. With the strength of a people and the power of community, we are Improving Our World... TOGETHER.

Teaching Our Children To Give
By David I. Bernstein, Ph.D.
Reprinted from eJewishPhilanthropy, 8.15.13
How do we teach our children to give, and to give generously, to worthy causes?
For most of us, as parents and grandparents, we teach by example, and by instruction. We talk about those values most important to us, and we model the behavior for our kids.
While this is true in so many areas of life, it may not be true in philanthropy.
In many families, including my own as a child, parental giving was something that the father and mother did on their own. While they talked about tzedaka to us as children, and we sometimes saw them give to a beggar on the street, most of their giving was done in consultation with themselves, and the check was written out of our sight. Perhaps it was an extension of the privacy of their finances; perhaps it was their modesty. It was only in cleaning up their apartment after their demise that we saw the extent of their giving.
I realize that we have done the same with our children - most of our giving has taken place out of the sight of our children. We do not often speak about the causes to which we donate money; when they have learned of our charitable donations, it has often been by chance. More

Community Journey to Israel
Mission and General Assembly
November 3-13, 2013Chairs, Lisa Dadone-Weiner and Henry Weiner
Immediately ahead of the 2013 General Assembly in Jerusalem, the Delaware Jewish community will journey to Israel for an amazing mission that will reveal Israel in a new way, forge special connections to the land and people, and provide a deeper understanding of the important work of Federation.
We will then join the GA, where thousands of current and emerging Jewish leaders hear from world-class speakers and learn from each other to shape an even brighter future for Israel and the Jewish people.
Travel dates are November 3-November 13, 2013
For this trip, we are fortunate to have Itai Tennanbaum as our guide. Itai was the guide for our community mission to Israel in 1999, and he is well known for making the journey in Israel an emotional, spiritual and educational adventure.
