NEWS & NOTES
Federation's weekly e-news to keep you informed, inspired and connected to Jewish life in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley.

Message from the CEO...

Greetings!,

This has been a busy week for our community. On Monday, our Israel Mission Committee met to discuss preliminary logistics and planning for our Community Journey to Israel, November 3-13, 2013. Our journey will include a visit to our Partnership2Gether community of Arad to see some of the wonderful projects our community specifically supports including the Ethiopian National Project (ENP) and a Youth Outreach Center. Stay tuned for additional updates in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Center Committee met at the Brandywine Library. Under the leadership of Chair, Regina Alonzo, the committee is doing amazing things statewide relative to Holocaust education. Please see below for two important programs next month - the Rededication of the Garden of the Righteous Gentiles on April 7th and our Yom HaShoah program on April 8th.

On Wednesday I joined community leadership at the home of Reiko and Barry Kayne in the first of our Federation/ADL speaker series. This specific session featured an expert on Extremism. We look forward to scheduling future speaker series in our community and furthering our collaboration with the Anti-Defamation League.

On Thursday I was invited to attend a new Interfaith initiative thanks to the leadership of Rabbi Michael Beals who is co-chairing this effort with Rev. Dr. Gregory Knox Jones. The Peace Drums Project promotes peace among Jewish, Muslim and Christian youth living in the Galilee region of Israel. A launch event is being planned on May 5th at the Delaware Art Museum.

Thursday evening, our Young Leadership Division Steering Committee met to review current and future programming to engage and energize our young adults. Thank you to Co-Chairs Karen Legum and Gina Schoenberg for their passion and commitment to building community.

With the strength of a people and the power of community, we are Improving Our World...TOGETHER.

Eva Fogelman, co-founder of the Jewish Foundation for Christian Rescuers and author of Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust, will be the featured speaker at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the rededication of the Garden of the Righteous Gentiles at the Bernard and Ruth Siegel Jewish Community Center.

The garden, the first monument outside Jerusalem to Christians who saved the lives of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe, contains trees originally planted in 1981 by Holocaust survivors residing in Delaware.  Three decades of exposure to the elements took their toll, but the garden has been restored by its original landscape architect, Robert Grenfell, and the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Committee.

A new tree will be dedicated by the family of Rachel and Todd Harad in memory of Andree and Suzanne Romain, two sisters who hid Rachel's father, Charles Rojer, and 12 other Jewish children in Belgium.

This historic event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the ceremony.

An Evening of Comedy with Rabbi Bob Alper
Saturday, March 23rd
7:00 PM
Congregation Beth Shalom

Rabbi Bob Alper is the world's only practicing rabbi doing stand-up comedy...intentionally. There's a reason why XM/Sirius satellite radio plays Rabbi Bob Alper's bits several times daily, often sandwiched between Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby.  For one, his unique background.  As an ordained rabbi with a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary, he has served congregations for fourteen years, which has prepared him well for a twenty-three year comedy career with wonderfully unique material presented in a way that's intelligent, sophisticated, and 100% clean.
